| Caught this from the home page...link to story Here . Is this the best way to get your viewpoint across? I don't like Bush anymore than the next person, but if you start rushing police, beating on their cars or throwing things at them...How can anyone take what you say seriously? It's one of the things that the "We Toke and We Vote" crowd has to combat: If you are already committing a crime, it is that much harder for people to give you any credability. Committing a violent crime makes me dismiss the "reason" even more. Just my two cents. Plains

| At least they weren't advocates for the marijuana movement. Our name hasnt been slandered anymore than it already is. Maybe Bush will re-look at his views now... nah, what am I saying? that'll never happen.

| Because protests like these only agrivate the problem. If the oposition to an issues is so violent or only forces more moderate people away from the issues. The only way to change things in to convince the politicaly moderate majority that the issue is valid. Thousands of youngerst rioting in the street is counter productive because it paints their issue to be radical and fringe. |

| And I believe the key word is "later". First the crowd became disruptive, then the police took steps to disperse them. It would have been much better if the police first would have started the fight, they didn't the protesters did. When did people who throw bottles and stones and damage police cars become "unarmed"? | Allow me to politely point out that the articles in the local papers were quite different in some cases than what made the network news, and generally are. The local papers in some cases are outraged by the use of force on the part of local law enforcement [the press was tear gassed and pepper sprayed]. The crowd was reportedly not unruly at the outset, and things went awry later, purportedly a result of actions by law enforcement.

| Good point. Should always check and recheck your source and not rely on just one view. Thanks for the reminder. Peace, Plains |

| i am from portland oregon and i was downtown when the riots started happening, and believe me, the police overreacted when the crowd started to grow. the crowd was doing nothing when cops started to mace and beat peaceful protestors. these people who were protesting had more than a good reason to be downtown: bush wants to cut down our forests and destroy our beautiful state. he is using our summer wildfires as an excuse to chop our forests down, when all he wants to do is encourage the growth of the lumber industry. i hate the president for wanting to destroy MY state, and i hate the police for overracting to a harmless protest. | |

| You know what? When the president is in the area, law enforcement will ALWAYS, and I mean ALWAYS be more apt to go with a higher amount of force. Rushing the police, throwing stuff etc. only marginalizes the proptestors and a vast majority of middle America immediately dissmisses them as "whackos" out of hand. As for rubber bullets and tear gas (the fact that they caught a big noseful of gas is what the media is so pissed about), they are less than lethal measures and safer than rocks and bottles, so the demonstrators were taking a big chance when they escalated.
