Cool Veteran Suicides

Now what the hell is this? I hear on the news that the returning veteran suicide rate is AVERAGING 105 a month? 105 a month! What the hell is going on at the V.A.? More American service men have killed theirselves by suicide than have been killed in Iraq? Holy jesus, somebody missed the boat on this one.......

I just can't imagine a reason except one. The survival rate of major, catastrophic wounds is now in the high seventies percentile, I believe. Could some agree with me that some of these men and women are waking up with too much of their body destroyed, and seeking a peace they feel denied? This scares me, because we aren't even feeling the effects of the returnee's from the "Garbage Pit's" of the world, Iraq and Afghanistan. This could be a catastrophic result of a war we were never ready for the first time, and we sure as hell weren't ready for this time

The Arab's have a saying I've heard......."The Desert Takes It All...."

Rommel, as great as his victories were, found out that the desert will eat your men and your equipment in it's own time. It is said to be one of the harshest enviroments in the world as far as bacteria. Maybe we should begin to think of General Erwin Rommel and his Afrika Corps in the desert for those years. The desert took them in the end........

We should hope it won't happen to too many of our men and women.....They've been thru enough.......

This war is different than previous ones where the soldiers could get some R and R fairly easily. Thats not the case in Iraq. The women aren't friendly and getting a drink ANYWHERE in the middle east is real hard to do.

I am confused at your lack of real, practical knowledge of the situation. There are liquor stores selling alcohol all over Baghdad. Ask any soldier who has served over there, alcohol isn't a problem. Even if the real can't be found, no Marine is going without his "mouthwash", they will make it. Some of it's pretty good, too.......

Women? C'mon man, don't you think there are street walkers in Iraq? Sorry to burst your bubble, but there are several thousand on the streets every night.

It seems strange to me that this would be your answer to obvious emotional and psychological problems these people are having. They are not in Iraq, they are home with family and friends and the Post Traumatic stress is eating them up. Most people who go to real combat don't mentally ever recover. The emotional and mental responses to stress related to military service can strike even the strongest of men or women.

A study was done during the second world war to see how long a soldier could mentally stand combat on the front lines without a break. The time limit was six months before the soldiers mental and physical responses would dull to the point that he was considered an ineffective. Some of these folks are doing three tours. How will these people react to being in a war zone too long? I think we are seeing the results..........

The war in Iraq is nothing like WW2 or Vietnam. Our soldiers in Iraq are more like policemen fighting an insurgency. Hell, some parts of Detroit are more dangerous than parts of Iraq, should all those people who live there be treated for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?

If they need it, then they should seek help, but we're not talking about them either, are we? We're talking about suicidal veterans.

The war in Iraq is like other wars. Especially for our soldiers. Booby trap and roadside bombs were used extensively in Viet Nam. You should also know that Viet Nam is almost the same hostile enviroment that the soldiers are going thru in Iraq.......

Your grasp of the situation is lacking it seems.........

I watch the news just like you. Yes, all our vets need the help they deserve to get over the experiences they have endured....we owe that much to them. To bad the VA is a screwed up mess with very little oversight.

I can`t provide a source, but I was reading about brain trauma resulting in thousands of practically invisible burst blood vessels being the signature injury in Iraq. I remember it stating that this was due to the use of IEDs - the shockwaves go straight through the ground, and if you`re in an armoured vehicle your brain shakes inside its skull.
