| Today`s news is dominated by Britain`s withdrawal from Basra. An Iraqi police chief has claimed that we have left behind better armed Shia militias, as THIS article explains. We`re talking about random gangs: insurgents and terrorists; people who have no problem with cutting off others` heads, in short and without a trace of hyperbole- this is the dominant force we`ve left behind, according to Jalil Khalaf. This story is repeated throughout Iraq. After the initial dust settled there ensued a power struggle on the ground, totally aside from fire directed at coalition forces and completely out of our hands. These people rose from the ashes with half a century of feuding and embittered oppression to make up for and we still shake our heads and wonder what went wrong. Where`s a Saddam when you need one? ![]() |
