What do you think would be the Dalai Lama's stance on the medical marijuana issue, more specifically the non-violent offenders serving long sentences in prison for running dispensaries?

I believe the Stance is that Under the Eightfold Path. Ingesting substances that cloud the mind is forbidden.

Therefore As a Buddhist I'm sure he might not approve. But it is medicanal related he might be more lenient. Who knows.

I beleive in the past Buddhist monks did use cannabis . Im sure buzzby could enlighten us (pun intended)

His Holiness would never say "fuck u" to anyone. He shows respect to friends and enemies alike.

This is Precept #5 of the Five Precepts, not part of the Noble Eightfold Path. Since we're talking about medicine, this precept would not apply.

The use of intoxicants has been forbidden to Buddhist monks from the very beginning. If ordinary monks ever used cannabis recreationally, it wasn't sanctioned by their abbot.

Tantric practices are the most esoteric in Buddhism and Hinduism. In the Tantric practices, there's something called the "left-hand path" in which practitioners attempt to find enlightenment by indulging the senses instead of moving beyond them. These practices are secret, but must include things normally forbidden to Buddhists. The left-hand path is considered to be very dangerous, more likely to push you further into illusion and ego than lead you to enlightenment. A practitioner can gain great power through the left-hand path and use it for selfish purposes.

I don't know what His Holiness' position would be. He certainly would favor compassion. That's what he's all about. OTOH, Buddhism tells us to obey the laws of the lands in which we live.

Buddhist monks did not use cannabis, though Hinduist ascetics, Sadhus, Sadvhis and other holy men/women have long traditions of use of cannabis.


The Gautama Buddha's teachings were at least partially based on the Hinduist traditions from his homeland of northern India, his teaching on reincarnation is directly inspired from the Hindu, but his practice was his own.

When George Lucas built his framework for the Star Wars universe, he drew from archetypal legends and religious beliefs. I have no doubt that he was referring to the left-hand path. Jedi powers are very similar to those attributed to Tibetan monks who have long studied the Tantric path. The Jedi are right-hand path practitioners, working selflessly for the greater good. The Sith are left-hand, pursuing power and wealth.

We own the DVD's, and I believe you are correct, buzzby. I am positive I saw George Lucas discussing that very thing in one of the extra interviews.
