| Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. I'm curious if anyone here is aware of other religions that express this sentiment in their teachings. I saw a web site somewhere that had like 8 different religions and quoted their holy texts where it could be found, but I have lost that page, and can't seem to find it again. And since we are on the subject, what is your opinion of this rule? Peace and Love

| I was raised Catholic, from age 1 to 12 I was under his thumb(now true blue atheist ). I really do like the meaning behind this though and when I have kids I'm going to teach them this as well. Oh and I really like the Buddhist one Spiral put; Hurt not others in ways that you yourself would find hurtful. Short N' Sweet.

Talk about idealistic. Here we have the "Golden Rule" that is invoked by no less than eight (thank you Spiral) of the world's significantly popular religions yet is actually practiced by what, maybe 5%, of those that banter it about? So what do I think about it. I think it represents the core of all that is holy; both in this life and the next. What has always been fascinating to me is the unrepentant hypocrisy of people throughout time. Preach it when obligated or out of convenience, forget it the rest of the time...

![]() My daughter points out how rude that was. I am sure the woman heard her. I could have easily gone off, but instead, I just said..."People are rude, honey," speaking directly to my daughter. She turns to me and says, "Excuse me?" All this is going on while she is unloading her cart. I reply, "I said people are rude. We had been waiting in line to checkout for 10 minutes when you rammed our cart out of the way to get ahead of us." She replies, "I am in a hurry, and it's not like you wouldn't have done the same thing." By this time, her cart is unloaded, and the cashier has almost rung up everything. I was upset with what she had done, and what she had said. I quickly replied back, "I would not have been rude. That's the problem with the world today, people like you. Always out for themselves, and it's sad." The cashier smiled, and I could tell that the woman was really pissed off because I could see it on her face. However, she didn't say anything else after that. She just paid the cashier and left. The cashier and myself discussed the situation a little while I was checking out. I was really proud that I was able to hold back. Despite the fact that I really wanted to let her have it. ![]() I don't believe there is any benefit in retaliation. I treat other people exactly like I would want to be treated. Not acting like the woman I mentioned above, for one. Not only that, but being courteous in general. Letting cars out when you're stopped at a stop light. Holding doors open for people, etc. I do get discouraged because I don't seem to get the same treatment back very much at all. ![]()

| I've never really been big into religion, but this basic principle has run my life for the most part. Especially since I started courting Mary J. She really helped me understand others' perspectives. |

| Very good story about the Walmart incident Vicki. Well done. Now my answer which probably a lot of you already know. I struggle with the "do unto others as you would have them do unto you". Probably a kick back from my younger days where and how I was growing up. It seems I had to "do unto others before they do unto me". Maybe someday I can totally master it. For now I still struggle with it and find myself slipping back into the "knock them on their ass before they can get their fist up" ![]() I do try though. OH WELL!!! Maybe this thread will be the reminder to push me a little farther toward it. Thanks everyone. ![]() 1Toke ( a work in progress for 54 yrs. and still not finished.) |

Of course, two cars at one intersection at the same time in my town is a traffic jam. Three cars at one intersection means supper's on at the Senior Citizens Hall. Even in the larger city where I work, only the teens seem to forget their manners. Once they become adults, they are pretty much as their parents tried to raise them to be: Polite young adults. | |
