I hesitated to post this here because it seems to just flirt with religious themes. I'm just wondering if anybody plans on donating any vital organs after they die. I've been sitting here thinking about it, and the thought of my dead body being harvested for organs just scares me shitless. I don't believe in the afterlife, but I cannot get myself to move past this emotional reaction. I can see myself being cremated or buried or basically anything, but the thought of my own body lying cold on an operating table with surgeons taking out my heart...

sorry for moving into this dark topic but i just wanted to hear how you guys feel about it, whether your comments are psychological, religious, anecdotal, or whatever

Something along those lines. I mean, if ultimately, my existence entire purpose is to be harvested so some little boy can use my liver and do something more, so be it. Cut me up. I don't need this 'cage' where I am going in death. These are but mere mortal shells of existence.

that's worth a thanks. to be honest, I don't think they would take any of my organs. They don't take my blood cause I have celiacs disease, even though i changed my diet and am now mostly symptomless. in any case it's people like you that save lives every day. thanks.

However, there is an issue. When you are a donor you have to contend with this possibility. If someone who is "important" needs an organ what is the chance you could die in surgery? In China prisoners are executed in a mobile unit when they need to fly organs out of the country.

I'm an organ donor..everything. I don't need them when I am dead, they might as well be put to use in saving someone else. They can take my heart out after I am dead.. I don't care. I'm sure I won't feel it

I agree with the previous posters.

I definitely won't be using the organs in question.
I won't feel the pain of having them removed.
I have no religious objections.

All that considered, I kind of feel morally obligated to be a donor.

No reason not to be a donor as far as I'm concerned. You don't actually lose anything by doing so. Especially if you're being cremated- then they don't even have to pretty you up for the funeral.

Seriously, though, if there's a way that I can help someone after I die, I want to do it. The wonder of death is that it gives way to new life- and while simply dying makes the room and frees up the resources, if I can save someone else from going before they had a fair shot at life, all the better.

Religiously, unless you worship the ancient egyptian pantheon, then I'm pretty sure your religion doesn't care about the body after death. And think of it like this- through your death, you saved another. Perhaps none of us are messiah material, but could you really imagine something else you could do with your death to better emulate him?

I believe that humans were put on this earth to progress, not regress. Harvesting organs is a mode of progression, it opens doors for people who normally wouldn't progress, due to lame organs. Is causes progression in science, and helps the donor to progress into a higher state of being, because every deed, good or bad will effect your next existence, whatever that may be.

As long as I'm dead, why shouldn't someone benefit from my body? I find it greedy that people feel they should be buried in whole, not to mention all the people who are cremated and are not donors. Those organs just go to waste in the bottom of a furnace. I have no qualms about death and dying, and when it happens to me, I would like to make sure everything I have is put to use by people who need it. My soul will rest easier for it.
