| This man and his minions are insane, a total lack of common sense and reality; their moral compass run amuk, Or what? Pope Benedict XVI arrives in Cameroon Pope tells Africa 'condoms wrong' Pope Benedict XVI, who is making his first papal visit to Africa, has said that handing out condoms is not the answer in the fight against HIV/Aids. The pontiff, who preaches marital fidelity and abstinence, said the practice only increased the problem. "A Christian can never remain silent," he said, after being greeted on arrival in Cameroon by President Paul Biya. The Pope is also due to visit Angola on his week-long trip, where thousands are expected to attend open-air Masses. Some 22 million people are infected with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa, according to UN figures for 2007. This amounts to about two-thirds of the global total. 'Painful wounds' According to Vatican figures, the number of Catholics in Africa has been rising steadily in recent years. HIV/Aids is a tragedy that cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms, which can even increase the problem ![]() ![]() Is Catholicism good for Africa? Baptised Catholics made up 17% of the African population in 2006, compared with 12% in 1978, the Vatican says. Pope Benedict said on the eve of his trip that he wanted to wrap his arms around the entire continent, with "its painful wounds, its enormous potential and hopes". HIV/Aids was, argued, "a tragedy that cannot be overcome by money alone, that cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms, which can even increase the problem". The solution lay, he said, in a "spiritual and human awakening" and "friendship for those who suffer". Speaking at the airport in Cameroon's capital, Yaounde, the Pope called on Christians to speak up in the face of violence, poverty, hunger, corruption and abuse of power. Sexual abstinence While in Africa, the pontiff is expected to talk to young people about the Aids epidemic and explain to them why the Catholic Church recommends sexual abstinence as the best way to prevent the spread of the disease. The Pope also met an imam from Cameroon's Muslim minorityHe gave a similar message to African bishops who visited the Vatican in 2005, when he told them that abstinence and fidelity, not condoms, were the means to tackle the epidemic. The BBC's Caroline Duffield, in Cameroon, says people in Yaounde have been energetically sweeping and cleaning everywhere in preparation for Pope Benedict's visit. The Pope will stay until Friday in Yaounde, where he will meet bishops from all over Africa who will be taking part in a meeting at the Vatican later this year to discuss the Church's role in Africa. In Angola, which is still recovering from 27 years of civil war, Pope Benedict will meet diplomats posted in Luanda and is expected to urge the international community not to abandon Africa. The pontiff is also due to hold private talks with political leaders in the two countries, both of which have been accused of corruption and squandering revenues from natural resources.

| That's the thing about Catholics...and religion in general...they try and try to mold people into little balls of what they think is right, without even taking into consideration their culture and living environment. Shame on you pope, you are only going to make the matter of global overpopulation worse. This is my opinion...AIDS. cancer. disease. There is so much of it going on in this world, but its just our mother (earth) trying to protect herself, trying to rid herself of the plague that is humanity. Now I do not think that all humans should die...I am not that type of person...I just think that some of them should. Our population needs to be kept in check, Africans are procreating like there is no tomorrow because they lack sexual education, and proper access to contraceptives, we all know that the "just say no" method is pretty much not an option, it just doesn't work...religion is a step backward, and in this day and age, we cant be taking backward steps, it could easily lead to the total annihilation of mankind. |

| Yes abstinence will work great in Africa! I mean seriously, if you barely have enough food to survive, have no money, and have to work hard all day wouldn't you want to do the one thing that naturally makes you feel good? I like how he continually states that condoms cause HIV to spread even when all data shows exactly the opposite. Maybe god told him its opposite day or something? Or more likely, he's just a moron. I think its strange that people still follow the pope. I mean, the crusades were a millennia ago, where it became apparent that the pope was just a front for a political organization. We have even proved that the document "The Donation of Constantine" which established Vatican city belonging to the pope, was forged around the year 750AD. The pope literally stole the land that Vatican city sits on, this has been known for years and still people think the pope is god or something. If the pope wants to change the image of Catholicism, he should stop doing things that Atheists can claim are a bane to humanity. Until then, Just another horror religion inflicts on humanity. |

My dad was catholic...but thankfully the herb helped to bring him out of his religious daze, so he (almost) never inflicted his parents religion on us, aside from threatening to send us to catechism when we were acting up. But my goodness is every other member of my immediate family fanatical about their religion...all 400 of them...it's kinda scary. | |

| Africa almost always has more children than it can feed. This has been exacerbated by the AIDS epidemic which has left so many children orphaned. In one statement, the pope denies these poor people the means to avoid starvation and AIDS. If it were enforceable, rather than a directive from a religious leader, it would be a crime against humanity. As is, the pope needs to get his moral compass adjusted.

| Could the pope be any more of a complete douche? First the holocaust is fake, now this? Fucking despicable.

| This should be proof organized religion is out of touch with reality (as though many of us didn't already know). here we have, for all purposes, the leader of a religion comprising 17.4% (approxmately) of the world's population stating something that runs completely contrary to well established scientific principals. It doesn't take a genius to realize that copndom use both reduces pregnancy and protects against disease(BOTH of which are drastically needed in Africa), yet the pope is stating that condom distribution will actually INCREASE cases of HIV in an area where its already more rampant than anywhere else on Earth. Any scientist stating it would be laughed out of the profession, or at the very least, shamed into silence. However, a spiritual leader can appearently lie to the world, and its OK. This should be on the front page of every news-related website and paper worldwide, because only true exposure to the rediculousness of his statements will wake people up and make them realize that maybe their spiritual leader just may be insane. God works in mysterious ways....or so they say..... but I really doubt He is in favor of HIV/AIDS wiping a people completely off the face of the earth, which is a likely outcome if those in AIDS-ravaged areas forsake condom useage based on the words of a religious leader.
