| That was a bad example. A really bad example. I didn't mean at all to compare the two the way it came out to be. I was trying to say that you have to have purpose behind the rituals you do as a part of your religion. I didn't mean to down or insult religions that do use marijuana for meaningful reasons. I just ment to make the point that if someone were to claim falsely that their marijuana use was for religion that would be pointless and disrespectful for others that do. I do not think marijuana use comes anywhere to close to realism and harshness of a brutal, hateful, sick crime like murder. Espicially for someone that has dealt with similar issues I shouldn't have compared the two so cousualy. If that's the way you took it, I apologise and in the future I'll make an effort to not repeat incomplete thoughts in my posts. Later..

| By the way. I was and am very calm. *Chuckles a bit* I venture that no one here will ever see me really angry, it is an ugly thing, so I keep it locked away where it can do no harm. Besides, anger leads to flames leads to nasty sessions and is extremely counter productive. Toke it tight. Kelly

| What I hate about this is that people would actually join this "religion". They would live a false life so they could "smoke themselves retarded". Does that bother anyone else? Why be false? Be yourself AND smoke your weed. My religion holds marijuana as a sacrament, but that's not why I am part of it. I believe the philosophy and the idealogy and the divinity of my deity... marijuana just helps me worship. You wouldn't care about your "religion" about marijuana. You'd just fake it so you could toke up. Maybe I'm being cynical but I've seen people steal the Rastafari culture just so they can "look cool" and smoke freely. So therefore, I adamantly disagree with this idea that you "barely put any thought into". I think about everything and I find this almost insulting as a religious person and as a marijuana smoker. Just my unwanted 2 cents. | |

| I think the rastafarians already beat us to it. Marijuana is used for many different rituals by rastas. Smoking marijuana is said to help the mind. Eating the herb is said to help the blood and body. The rastafarian religion has been around for a long time, but only became well known(on not-by the looks of this thread) in the U.S. because of bob marley. Rasta is to Jamaica what christianity is to the U.S. The religion is very centered on marijuana ,and rasta's praise JA after every hit(pain in the ass if your smokin' with one). Also, before you run off and join, keep in mind, true rastas don't think women should smoke because they don't have the mind for it? |

| We didn't "beat" anyone "to it". People have been smoking ganja in Jamaica since before the blacks were forced here. The Indians had been smoking it as a remedy for practically EVERYTHING. When we smoke herb we realize the powerful effects it has on the soul. We didn't "patent" the act, we refined it ![]() Don't generalize Rastafarians so much. One Rastaman may have a completely different idealogy that another. The only "requirement" to be a Rasta is to believe Haile Selaisse I was Divine. Many Rastas don't wear dreadlocks and don't smoke marijuana, many do. Many don't live in Jamaica, many do. Many don't believe Jesus Christ was the Messiah, many do. Many aren't black, many are. The Rastafarian "religion" HASN'T been around for a long time. Less than 100 years probably. It all started with Marcus Garvey SUPPOSEDLY saying "Look to the Africa for the Rise of a Black King" or something along those lines. Haile Selaisse I became Emperor of Ethiopia (devout Christian) and many in Jamaica began to think he was the Messiah or God himself. The "religion" (it's a way of life, a culture) is NOT centered on marijuana! It's centered on living an ital (vital) life, sticking to one's roots, believing in Haile Selaisse (Jah Rastafari). Marijuana is merely a tool to achieving an irie (chilled out, objective, spiritual) view of the world and to become one with God (where the term "I and I" comes from). I've never met a Brethren who praised Jah after each hit. Sometimes, however, in the Bobo Dread sect; the bowl (chalice) is blessed with a prayer to Selaisse before the flame is put to it. And you're wrong once again, rasta-women smoke up just as much as the men. Even children puff on the trees. Where on earth did you get your information??? Talk to me if you have any questions or concerns about Rastafari. I've got a wealth of knowledge on the subject due to personal fascination, belief, and choosing to do several reports for school (long time ago, but whatever)... | |

| I'm sorry if I offended you. I have been to Montego Bay and Negril, Jamaica several times. My info comes from true rastas in those areas. As far as not seeing people praise Ja after each hit...I'll let the twenty some people I know, that this is not common practice? |

| "Ja" is spelled JAH. Get it right. Jah Rastafari, Haile Selaisse, Conquering Lion of the Twelve Tribes of Judah, Lion of Zion, HIM, The Black King, Lord of Lords, King of Kings, God Almighty. I certainly have never smoked with a bredren that HAD to praise Jah after each hit. I have however seen it occasionally after a good toke on a chillum much as a christian might say "Oh God! that was a good hit, im gonna be baked" ya know? Maybe what you've observed is a cultural regionally practice of the Rastas where you've seen it happen, however Rastafari is not a way of life with a centralized location. Rastas are found in many places. Basically, this is the situation: it's not a prevalent ritual performed by all or a majority of the believers or sympathizers of the religion. | |
