| For those of you interested in or curious about expanding your mind and spirituality through meditation, I thought it may be helpful to share some techniques for doing so. Remember, that meditation is a technique/skill and as such it requires practice to be good at. If you find yourself falling asleep or not being able to calm yourself to the point of meditation, don't give up. You instinctively do it right before you go to sleep, or when you day-dream. Meditation=weightlifting for your brain. Also, meditation with a sober mind is sometimes a little more difficult. Marijuana helps IMMENSELY! Meditation is a very mental activity, and is best done when the mind is calm and free of anxieties, pressures, and distractions. Although it can be used to break up these very things, it takes a great deal of mental/emotional control to do so. There are several things you can do before meditating to slip your mind into a calm state such as: Listening to soft/soothing music, taking a walk, taking a nap and of course, smoking weed. I often smoke weed and then listen to jazz while meditating, although silence is sometimes golden. After you feel that you have calmed your mind, the easiest thing to do is assume a position that you can be comfortable in for a while. For me, this is either laying on my back or sitting in a chair or against the wall. Just do whatever is naturally comfortable, but remember to keep a good posture. Now, you can either stare into space (similar to how you would day-dream) or close your eyes... Just let your mind wander, not focusing on anything in particular, let it follow it's natural patterns and soon, it will come to a state of mininmum consciousness. Some may recognize it as the state you are in right before you fall asleep. The goal here is to keep your consciousness active, but not so active that it dominates your mind. In other words, remain conscious enough to direct your mind, but not so conscious that you "snap out" of your meditative state. This is the largest and most difficult hurdle to jump, but it's absolutely necessary for further/deeper meditation. The first meditation exercise that I recommend is locating the source of your spiritual energy. I won't tell you where it's commonly found to come from, but I will say that if you've ever had the feeling that you are outside of your physical self, piloting your body, you know where it is. While in meditation just feel the energies inside of yourself and try to detect where they are strongest. This part of you, this source of power, is your connection to your soul and it is available to you at all times, awake and much more so asleep. I've developed this technique to the point where I can meditate in a noisy cafeteria, and sometimes while walking, drawing energy from this source to relieve stress, anxiety, and headaches. Anyone and everyone who meditates, add on to this and give the techniques a try... This thread has huge potential to be interesting... |

| I can resume meditation in three words: controlling your emotions. As I said in your other thread "Symbols of..." (sorry dood, can't seem to remember titles very well), I truly believe that thoughts, emotions and feelings are all the same, Arise, so when you put meditation in the equation (hey, I made a rhyme! ) it's all very simple: control your emotions and you are a master meditator.I believe I have accomplished this to some degree. If you can control your emotions, then you are really meditating, not in that "sit down, cross your legs, close your eyes and say 'uuummmm' " kind of way, but in the true sense of the act of meditating. What do you try to achieve when you meditate? Balance, plain and simple. When you meditate, all you are doing is balancing your mind and body (although some would add spirit to this, but I believe that mind is spirit... anyways...) and relaxing to the point where you do not have all those strenuous thoughts going through your head. You, in that moment, are one with yourself and with the surrounding environment, becoming very aware of what defines you as a person. This would be the spiritual meditating (sitting down, legs crossed, etc) that could be classified as "total" meditation. Now, when you are talking with someone, and lets say that at some point you find yourself arguing with the other person, emotions come into play. You can find yourself suddenly feeling angry, or frustrated, with the conversation, and you tend to become very biased (remember, thoughts=emotions=feelings) because you only "feel" one way (angry, frustrated, etc). If you could balance yourself in that moment, and realize this, you would instantly become aware of many other points of view adn could accept another notion of the conversation. You may even find yourself understanding completely what the other person is trying to say, and this way approach the matter being discussed more intelligently. This, my friends, is the essence of meditation. Being able to control oneself. Peace.7L PS: I don't know if this is exactly what you were looking for Arise, but I think it's a good idea and may help many in their journey through meditation ![]()

| has anyone here heard of chakras? It goes hand and hand with meditation. Infact that is one of the main reasons why some people medititate to open their chakras. There are seven (7) main chakras that go up along your spine. Well if any one wants to no more just link me up. |

| I don't think there should be techniques to meditiate; it should come naturally. Just sit in a room, quietly, and still your thoughts. That's about it. The breathing exercises, and certain sitting positions, and mantras, etc. are kind of pointless, why should someone have to teach me how to meditate? It should be within me. That's how I started. Just sat down on my bed in comfortable position and closed my eyes and just sat.

| There's different types of meditation, too. If you focus on nothing, only the thoughts in your head, this is more like the state of consciousness before sleep. If you focus on everything, and try to become one with your surroundings, it's more like a sort of hyper-awareness. One can also focus on a single object, letting the background blur away. A candle flame, for example, or the moon. Meditation is a good way to practice shifting your energy to a particular task. Take one minute to prepare your mind, I've found, and you perform better, as opposed to having ninety thoughts competing for attention. |

| I was recently on an off-topic hallucinogenic chemical and weed while meditating. I can without a doubt say that it was a life altering experience. I was lucid dreaming with complete control over my actions and environments. I found that concentrating on everything at once is the most effective way to meditate for me... I hyper awareness turns into selective awareness, mostly of my own thought process. |
