| Black Elk Speaks is an awesome story, and is considered by some to be the native American version of revelations. It used to be you could read it on the web somewhere, that is where I read it years ago, but I can't find it now. There is mention of a plant or tree in the book that some have thought to be the cannabis plant (maybe) It is a very interesting story none the less. Another interesting one by Black Elk is called The Sacred Pipe which covers the myth of the pipes origins among the natives. I find it interesting that the Christian missionary's viewed the natives as savages, when in fact their traditions were very Christ like in many ways. At any gathering or event, they would have what they called the Give Away where those who had, gave to those who had not. This went to extremes sometimes where a whole tribe would give everything to another tribe at an annual gathering, and the following year it would all be given back. Of course the government had to put a stop to it, probably because in giving there was no taxes generated. (jk) something else natives believed was that if you did something to help another that the powers of the universe would repay that person fourfold. Needless to say, people were generally helpful towards others. I probably romanticize the natives too much, but if it weren't for the helpfulness of the native bands to the invaders, er immigrants, those who landed at Plymouth Rock wouldn't have survived, and the Lewis and Clark expedition likely would have failed. In being so nice to the whites, they effectively sealed their own fate, but sometimes I feel that their high level of spirituality gave them some foreknowledge of their own demise I have a neighbor who is fond of ranting on about the current illegal immigrant issues, and I find myself laughing sometimes, because those who bitch the loudest are descendants of those who stole this land from its rightful inhabitants. Karma at it's finest...

| Interesting I figured those who crossed the land bridge were the first inhabitants, and the natives the Europeans encountered were the descendants of those people Maybe rightful inhabitants was not the proper term to use. I had a coworker once who after I made some comment or other about how the natives got screwed, pointed out that they got what they deserved, and if they hadn't been conquered, they would still live as they always had. (pointing out the progress of the white man) I wondered if that would have been such a bad thing. At the very least, they had a very high regard for all of creation, as good stewards should. So who were the original inhabitants of this continent if not the natives that the Europeans found living in North America? |

| The people who crossed the land bridge were the first human inhabitants of the Western Hemisphere. They didn't take the land from anyone. Their descendants are the Native Americans.

| The book Winter Walk is a really good story about Alaskan native villagers, I recommend First Fish, First People as well. Both of these incorporate culture and religion. Ah, quick Google search - First Fish, First People is a Google book. Way cool, .
