Cool What Religion Do You Say You Are And Why?

I hope I have enough options up there, and if I don't, we can always add more with our comments........

What do you claim? Is that the way you actually believe or were you "raised" to believe the same thing your parents did and never gave it another thought?

I am an atheist.

Before we get started though, I'd like to ask everyone to please be civil to each other and the ideas or opinions of other's. We all know that discussions of religion can get, shall we say, "heated"? So please, respect the other persons opinion and let the ideas flow........

I've been a practicing Catholic for all of my life but recently it seems that I've become more agnostic than anything. I put Catholic because legally I am still tied to my parish, but more or less have stopped practicing a faith of any kind. At this point I believe that the institution of religion itself is where we all went terribly wrong. It's all well and good that we gather to practice shared beliefs, however, the beliefs we claim to share are not our own, rather they are the beliefs of a select few who have grown their beliefs into an empire, a means of making money and controlling the masses. Not that that was their intention exactly, but what else have they done besides make money and control the people? Well for one, they have waged war. A bit contradictory? IMO the whole idea of organized religion is self-contradictory and those involved in any high position in any religion are incredibly hypocritical. Buddhism may be an exception. That's the only religion I would consider converting to, if anything. Overall, as you can tell, I'm fairly disenchanted with the whole idea of religion. I believe there is something out there more intelligent than us, what that thing is? Who the hell knows! And we shouldn't claim to know when we don't. So there's my two and a half cents.

Atheist. Simply because I took all the facts that I've discovered, second questioned everything that religion tells me, and made my own decision. I used to pray when I was younger, for a while I occasionally went to church as a Catholic, but it simply just all seemed like a fairy tale to me, to give a person reasons to be good in fear of hell, and to be completely honest religion seems to keep balance in many people. I have a theory that even if the government, or anyone out there for that matter conclusively discovered that God is simply impossible, I doubt they would tell the public in fear of the enormous amount of problems it would create.

Picture waking up tomorrow, and the President shows us accurate proof that there is no God. The world would go on a rampage.

Not saying the government is holding this information from us already..just saying if the day ever came, it wouldn't be pretty.

True things. That's because if there is no God, then there may be no after-life, and that simply won't fly with most human beings, seeing as though most of us cannot fathom the opposite of existence. Haha. Think about it though, if you didn't know what life was before life, then what's saying there is nothing after life. Perhaps it's simply nothing, just as if you were never born.

Other.

I know just as much as any other human - nothing. So I'm not going to speculate about the spiritual world through ancient texts or conform to organized religions with modern agendas. I just respect my fellow man and planet while I am still alive, I am respectful, courtesy and kind - hopefully if there is a Creator he will realize I'm only a confused human being with a good heart.

Perhaps I may know the truth some day, perhaps not...

I'm not gonna answer the poll because I don't "say" that I am any religion. Ever since I left the Church at 14 years old, I've kinda been hopping around. Sometimes I'll tell people what school of thought I am most aligned with, but I'm definitely not a "declared practiser."

Paganism, Deism, Pantheism are all very similar to the religious idea that I'll end up at, I'm sure. I believe that God and the Universe are the same thing. That is basically the only idea that I consider myself to have faith in.

Agnostic. I dont really know any religion well enough to believe in it yet. I was raised methodist, i went to church nearly every sunday when i was young, but i never paid a bit of attention, and dont remember much about it except for the basics. I will probably go on a religion exploration one day when im a but older and decide later when i know more about them.
