good points jebus, but unfortunately any religious person will respond with "well, god gave us free will". Its their ultimate argument for any agnostic/athiest response.

basically.. heres my take on it. If there is a god, he will not judge us by whether or not we believe in him during our lifetime on earth. He will judge us by our actions towards others.

If god indeed does judge us by whether or not we believe in him through faith... and the fact that he gives us no tangible/solid evidence for his existence, then he is a selfish being. But that cannot be, because god is perfect, and selfishness is not a part of perfection.

If god shows himself to me when i die, i will believe with all my heart.

But, If he sends me to hell because i didnt believe in something there was no evidence for me to believe in, then he is selfish, and not a god i want to waste my time worshipping anyways.

What if we've already discovered life on other planets, or some other scientific evidence that proves that there is no God, there could never have been a God, and that we are just random products of random occurences, but they don't want the masses to know about it, so they keep perpetuating the God myth to brainwash us into submissiveness?

Religion is an extraordinarily profitable interprise. Churches and religious organizations are exempt from taxes, yet they often distribute offering plates, or encourage tithes.

Look at history, and all the blood that has been shed worldwide, that can be justified in the name of one's God. It's doubtful any other subject will alienate people as significantly as the topic of religion.

Religion, in order to survive and be passed on through generations, must have huge numbers of followers, or believers if you prefer, so they convert you into believing one God is better for you than another God. It can be very confusing, especially when the human psyche has a need to belong to something, to be a part of a large group of like-minded people. It's very soothing to feel like you are not all alone, that someone cares about you in the midst of a harsh, cruel world. That's why they say God loves you unconditionally.

Some quick thoughts... All these assume that God exists, which I do not necessary believe.
Since most on this board live in the Western world, we will assume the beliefs of western culture and a Christian God here. If this is the case, then we believe that God made man in his own image, and this would be more than a physical image. but a psychological image as well. Early testaments tell of a vengeful God as much as a peaceful God. Seems to me that this God would be as hypocritical as we are, which would allow us to both worship his name AND show ill will toward each other.
According to most major world religions, at least by commonly accepted interpretations, there is really nothing on the Earth or other planets that could disprove the existance of God. Thats the great thing about religious dogma. You can account for any occurrance that may contradict another by claiming God's will, God's mysterious ways, His divine plan, miracles, etc. Man's feelings about God are different only in scale from my Bostonian belief that this is the year for the Red Sox. Jesus hasn't come back, and Ted Williams won't either, but year after year, scandal after scandal, we all come back. Why? Because it makes us feel good, brings us all together, and gives us a reason to believe that we are better than everyone else.
