Not to speak for anyone else, but I'll answer that anyway.

My state has already had it's caucus, I voted for Ron Paul. For me, it's not about voting for whoever can win, it's about voting for the person that IMO has earned my vote.

And quite frankly, just because Romney and the GOP have jumped behind McCain doesn't make him the best candidate, it's reasoning like that that puts unfit persons in office.

Yeah... that's like saying let support bush because he is so popular and he got the whole neocon group behind his back. No, it just doesn't work like that. Hitler was well known by A LOT of people, you don't see me jumping behind him yelling heil hitler.

I agree but it does make him the one that got the most votes and thats how this thing called democracy works.

I dont know if he'll get the nomination or not yet, its not over till the convention and stranger things have happened. all i know is that my parents both voted for him in wisconsin today, and theyre usually hardcore democrats, so i hope a lot of people felt free to switch in our open election today.

I like the guy but even Ron Paul knows there is NO way in hell that he's going to get the nomination. The best he can hope for is a chance to speak at the convention during prime time.

I just hope he'll have the decency to not run as an independent when he doesn't receive the Republican nomination. At that point, a vote for Ron Paul would be the same as a vote for McCain.

I like Ron Paul as much as the next guy, but realistically, it's either going to be Clinton, Obama, or McCain sitting in the White House next year.

I'm not criticizing anyone for their voting decisions, but I feel that choosing someone who has a realistic chance of winning and will bring about the change this country needs is a better use of my vote than choosing someone who, despite being the best candidate, has no chance of winning.

Just my two cents, and I apologize if I've offended anyone. I realize politics is a bit of a touchy issue.

But thats negates the purpose of an election; to allow the people to choose their leader.

If you choose Obama, Clinton, or McCain on the sole purpose that they will (undoubtedly) be one of our next presidents because the majority of Americans are voting for them you are being herded.

Exercise your rights, it's infinitely more valuable than saying "Hey, I picked the 'winner'!" Shouldn't you instead be saying "Hey, I voted for who I believed in".

You didn't offend me, its just I exactly what you said from a lot of people, and I just like to point this out...

You're right, the whole "I'm picking the winner mentality" is pure nonsense, and it's absolutely no reason to vote for someone.

However, looking at the polls and the numbers, it's clear that Ron Paul has little chance of even gaining the Republican nomination, let alone winning the election. I'm voting Obama this year, not just because I think he has a good chance of winning, but because I believe he will bring about (or at least make a good step toward) the changes this country needs. Ron Paul is also promising change (and I have no doubt that he would deliver), but I can't see him winning. He just doesn't have the money and support behind him that the other three candidates have.

So yes, my choice is a compromise. I am choosing the candidate I feel is "second best" because I truly don't believe my first choice has a chance of winning. It's a difficult compromise to make, and a very difficult one to defend (as you may have noticed), but I feel it is right.

In summation: I believe Obama will change this country in positive ways and has a good chance of getting elected. I believe Ron Paul would also change this country in positive ways, but has very little support, and thus, very little chance of getting elected.

Again, you're completely free to vote for whomever you like. And certainly don't go switching camps because of my ramblings.

EDIT: I guess I could have saved myself a lot of trouble by saying this in my first post: if Ron Paul does somehow win the Republican nomination, then he definitely has my vote, even if Obama is his competitor (pretty much win-win at that point). However, if he chooses to run as an independent (which he has said he won't, but that remains to be seen) then I will not be voting for him.

I think Ron Paul is the man! If he runs as an Independent, I would have a REALLY hard time choosing one. I agree with just about everything he says.

While Spiral has a point, I look at it like this. I DO NOT want Obama or Hillary in the White House. My vote for McCain will be a vote against either of those two, nothing more or nothing less. I've stated elsewhere that while I don't completely agree with MCain, the idea of him leading this country doesn't give me nightmares the way the idea of Obama or Hillary leading this country does. While i supported ron APul thorughout most of the primaries, its obvious he doesn't have a chance of winning at this point. While thats unfortunate, at this point, I'm concentrating not so much on electing McCain as I am making sure neither of the democtratic frontrunners make it to the White House. At this point, its obvious our President will be one of three people, two of which have viewpoints far removed from my own. In my opinion, a vote for McCain means thats its that much more likely neither Barack or Hillary will win. Its not about voting for the winner as it is about keeping certain people OUT of the white house.
