But he's still trying to shore up his right-wing base—so this past Sunday, he again welcomed the support of right-wing evangelist John Hagee, who said "Hurricane Katrina was, in fact, the judgment of God against the city of New Orleans."1

Obviously, Hagee's beliefs are more than a little "out there," and I don't agree with them in the least. But at the same time, it's difficult for me to feel sympathy for people who were too stupid to leave a city that's below sea level and had a hurricane approaching. If someone absolutely MUST bail you out in this sort of situation, let it be the state in question, not the feds.

Yes, how dare those folks be so poor as to not have transportation...So old and sick to not be able to walk out and so gullible to believe the buses were really coming.

If you believe that the majority of those folks chose to stay...I've got a bridge to sell ya.

The mayor's mandatory evacuation order was issued 20 hours before the storm struck the Louisiana coast, less than half the time researchers determined would be needed to get everyone out.
Quote:
City officials had 550 municipal buses and hundreds of additional school buses at their disposal but made no plans to use them to get people out of New Orleans before the storm, said Chester Wilmot, a civil engineering professor at Louisiana State University and an expert in transportation planning, who helped the city put together its evacuation plan.
Quote:
An estimated 50,000 New Orleans households have no access to cars, Wilmot said.
Quote:
State and local plans both called for extra help to be provided in advance to residents with "special needs," though no specific timetable was prepared. But phone lines for people who needed specialized shelters opened at noon Saturday — barely 30 hours before Katrina came ashore in Louisiana.

In the city of New Orleans alone, more than 100,000 of the city's residents described themselves as disabled in a recent U.S. census.
Quote:
To call an evacuation on Sunday morning when the storm was going to hit on Monday morning at 6 a.m. is just ... negligence," King said. "If he'd called it better than that he would have saved lives.
Quote:
New Orleans has a significantly larger population without means of transportation, so it's a much bigger problem for the city. ... The answer is very simple — evacuation," he said.

I honestly can't fathom McCain being elected POTUS at all. What with the Republicans coming off 8 years in the oval office, the state of the economy and the war and his temper...The Dems would have to snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory to lose this election.

I disagree. With Clinton and Obama constantly smearing each other, I feel they are dividing the party so deeply that neither one of them will get enough support in the end to win the general election. The candidates' politics leave even more to be desired; McCain is, for the most part, a moderate (I certainly don't consider him a conservative). Obama and Clinton are both extremely liberal. I think the majority of independents will be drawn towards McCain (this has to have been at leasdt the third time I've said this on here).

I think if Hillary truly wanted to see a Democrat elected this year, she would've dropped out a while back. I'd say Obama has FAR better chance of getting elected than she does, and her stubborness is only dragging him further down at this point.

To sum it up, I don't think there's any way Clinton could beat McCain. Obama might.

And you can say it 300 more times and I still won't agree with it.

Repetition won't change my mind.

I agree that Obama has a better chance given Clinton's history and the public's perception of her, but I don't see this dragging the democratic party down at all. The sheer numbers of Democrats showing up to the polls as compared to Republicans as well as the huge difference in funding slanted towards the Dems all points to a Democratic advantage.

We'll know in November which one of us is right.

My objective wasn't necessarily to persuade you, Plains, just to get you to provide some sort of reasoning for your opinion (something you had yet to do until this most recent post). My point in stating my repitition was to point out that we had gone over this before, and I never received any kind of response from you on the matter.

Maybe its wishful thinking, but I think the Democrats are going to throw away a "sure thing" before all is said and done. Yes, the competion is driving people to the polls, but how many Dems are going to vote for a candidate that spent his or her entire campaign tearing down the person they supported? While making for interesting primaries, I don't see it as an advantage come November. I think many of the Dems will "defect" to McCain's side (he HAS been labeled as a RINO many times, which means he might appeal to many Democrats and/or independants) rather than elect the opponent of their candidate of choice. Both Obama and Clinton have done a great job ignoring McCain and beating each other around. Both have made comments that have alienated them for large populations of voters. I think they both lost plenty of supporters in the last month or two alone. Between Obama's "guns and God" comments (and the complete lack of apology following them...he just claimed to say what "everyone knew to be true" ) and Hil's "misspeaking" about being pinned down under sniper fire, I think a lot of people that could go either way were pushed away. Clinton outright lied, and Obama made himself sound as though he was quite the elitest, which was a fear many voters had BEFORE he made such comments. Add in the fact McCain has the status quo going for him (ever since this country was founded, for better or worse, its been headed up by a white male) and I can't help but believe he'll pull this one off. Whether you like him or not, you can't argue the fact a certain % of voters simply will not vote for an African American, or a woman. Considering that the battle they have locked themselves locked into, I think its going to cost votes neither side can afford to lose. Maybe I'm completely off base (wouldn't be the first time ) but I just don't think the Democrats are going to pull this one off, no matter how badly Bush and his cronies tarnished the image of the Republican Party. I think the Democrats sabotaged themselves from day one by having two candidates many see as unelectable.

(that doesn't mean I'm going to quit stockpiling certain things in the event I'm wrong though!! One can only hope for the best while preparing for the worst)
