"HARPS is a unique, extremely high precision instrument that [is] ideal for discovering alien worlds," Stephane Udry of Geneva University, who made the announcement on behalf of the international consortium that built the instrument, said in the observatory statement. "We have now completed our initial five-year program, which has succeeded well beyond our expectations."

"We are on the road," Udry told CNN in a phone call from Portugal. "The end of the road is finding life and other planets like our own, but we have to go step by step."
HARPS has also boosted the discovery of so-called super-Earths -- planets with a mass a few times that of Earth. Of the 28 super-Earths known, HARPS facilitated the discovery of 24, the European Southern Observatory statement said. Most reside in multiplanet systems, with up to five planets per system.

Super earths!?!? Hah that would be ridiculous!! Could you imagine HUGE life forms living on these planets!??! Ha who knows how big aliens could be!! Super scary lol

It seems like finding new planets outside our solar system are becoming commonplace lately. They are finding them so fast they can't keep up.

I guess as telescopes get more and more powerful they can see further and further into our universe. Now the real question is how do we get out there >.<

Wouldn't that be amazing if there were other planets just like ours?

You would think that bigger planet means bigger life forms but that might not be the case. Gravity can actually stunt the growth of lifeforms and make it hard for them to get big. Just look at the ocean and whales.

edit: for anyone not able to put that last part together, water=less gravitational pull

I was just thinking something along those lines as I read the excerpt. Even if we were able to travel to those planets, the gravitational force of a "super earth" may very well kill us. It would definitely be interesting to see what resides on planets like that.

i really hope they find other life. we already know theres other life. theyve been watching us like in those hover things. and they came and helped build the pyramids and other shit back in the day. i watch the discovery channel and thats whats up!
