Default Earths oxygen?

In history class someone ended up having a discussion about trees and how they are vital to our existence. Now I have alot of liberial views but im no tree hugger (just for reference). But anyways my history teacher went on to say that we get most of our oxygen from the algie in the sea (in america at least). Im not scientist so hopefully someone can expand upon the idea.

Yeah I just watched a show on discovery that said the same thing. Like 80% of all oxygen is released by algae in the sea.

What really confuses me is that we are so worried about emitting carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, BUT without carbon dioxide trees and algae would not survive. So how is carbon dioxide bad????????

Ha not only would trees and algae not survive, but we wouldnt survive! Every breath you take your breathing out carbon dioxide. So I guess to stop global warming lets just stop breathing! I think its a government hoax as I have seen laws trying to get passed that would tax businesses for emitting carbon dioxide. I think what we do as humans has little effect to the earth. An example? Think of an ant colony, even the biggest ant colony in the world makes no difference to us because the earth is so huge! Thats just my take I hope to hear more feedback.

The percentages seem high to me but large portions do come from the ocean, yes. We do still use the trees though. Consider the impact of someone from a sea level area who goes to Mile High staduim and has a hard time catching their breath in a long game. With any part of it cut out the total supply is reduced and we're more restricted, especially at altitude. The more discussed importance today though is as a carbon sink.

Carbon isn't an all or nothing deal, it's a matter of degree. Water is needed for life but if you drink enough you'll drown in your own body fluids, a woman died like that not too long ago as part of a radio stunt. Almost anything in too large or small of an amount or the wrong places can be a problem. Everything alive today is adapted to the temps and other environmental factors we've got now and a sudden change is often more than they can adapt to.

Rather than try to argue it out and explain it here I'll point you to a document that's already answered most questions people might have on the subject. The section you probably want is section 3, "It's Not Caused By CO2". The rest is worth a read though.

How to Talk to a Climate Sceptic : A Few Things Ill Considered

Anyone who tries to turn it into a "carbon is good/bad" argument on you either doesn't have a clue what the debate even is, or they find it useful to be intentionally dishonest. Too little water is bad, to much is bad. Too little or too much carbon pretty much the same. Not because it has any natural "harm" or poisonous quality as some dishonestly try to insinuate so much as the fact that everything alive today is adapted to the way things are now and if that's changed faster than they can evolve to adapt many will go extinct, and it will have large impacts on us as well. It already is in ways.
