Default home made... grinder??

i hate to sound like a cheapie, but sometimes it's just more fun to make and use something you've crafted yourself (usually these devices are pretty unhealthy for smoking though)
most stoners would agree with me that while home made may not do the job as well as some overpriced piece from a head shop, the act of being the mcguyver smoker is always fun

so i don't own a grinder currently, i probably will go buy one this month even, but i saw someone suggest making one using those round altoid sour tins and i had one lying around so i thought it might be a cool idea
while it's not exactly the easiest device to turn, i'm sure with some modifications even that could be improved

i'm just looking for some suggestions on how to implement a sturdy set of teeth and how to keep it bound to the tin
in the end it might be simply cheaper to go out and buy a grinder rather than having to buy some industrial adhesive, but maybe you guys have some ideas for a round metal device i could cut jagged teeth through and somehow keep it placed tight within the tin

this is just for fun so don't take it too serious, hopefully i'll inspire someone to become an engineer
of all the home made devices you see stoners creating, rarely do you hear about them crafting their own grinder

I used a pepper grinder when I had a ton of schwag. Worked well for one hitter bong blasts!

How good are you with woodworking?

If you can make the body out of wood...then make a template so you can hammer small nails in to a suitable length on the grinding side. Then take a Dremel or something to cut the nails off at the surface on the top and bottom of the grinder. You can then find something...maybe a nice piece of tooled leather or something to cover the unsightly cut off nails.

The nails will have to be placed strategically so that when the ones on top cross the bottom ones, it's smooth and not clunky...hence, the template.

I LOVE the idea! Might try it myself! Everyone wants to make a pipe...but I've never heard of a homemade grinder!

I would suggest a grinder being something you buy since a lot of them have kief catchers now, and though you COULD make one w/a kief catcher, you'd need to put a good amount of work into it. I love making bongs out of any kind of bottle I have, but I still suggest buying a grinder w/ a kief catcher.

The problem I see w/making a grinder is you'd need to get the teeth to stick to the base and the only thing I can think of is super glue or some sort of rubber adhesive. You'd also need to find some semi-sharpe metal for the teeth, which to find in such a small size would probably be hard to find (or expensive). I think it'll be a lot of work but if you're really interested, good luck.

EDIT: 2 people posted while i was posting and I never even thought of a nail in wood.

yeah the wood sounds like a good idea, lot of work though
i have a ton of nails but they're a bit rusty now, i also had a wood burning kit but my mom took that away looong ago (i used it to make a cool pen pipe which went from pen mode to pipe mode, not that i ever used it to smoke with.. too unhealthy)

yeah i don't even think about the kief catcher when i think of buying a grinder, and i had the chance to buy a nice kief grinder when it was really cheap
someone i know has a three grinders, two with kief catchers and they exclusively use the one without it some reason, maybe because its the biggest of all of them
i've also not been too concerned of the size though, if i need to do two separate grinds so be it

anyways i'm trying to come up with the simplest idea for teeth i can find, someone actually had a picture on some message board of their altoid tin grinder but i never got the picture to work
i'm thinking if you had a 2nd altoid sour tin, you could take the top later, remove the side flaps, grind it down a bit so it fits inside the top later, then just slice some teeth through the metal

i'm also kind've curious if people think it's safe to be making a home made grinder out of some aluminum tin though, the wood idea at least sounds healthier
pepper grinder now that's an interesting idea.. hmmm...
i remember knowing people who would use their coffee grinder, my god the amount of kief that would accumulate on the sides
i really don't like the coffee grinder idea though, i don't want my stems to be ground into a fine powder that i end up smoking
i generally like to remove the seeds and stems BEFORE grinding, but my whole reason for wanting to start grinding now is i'm smoking a lot more of the exotic pot lately and it's so sticky it feels like a waste when i break it up with my fingers

i remember one time i tried to be really picky and remove all the stems with this one exotic bud and like.. nothing was left after i picked it all out so i just got so upset i was like "man i need a grinder, i'm too discerning"

i hope someone gets creative after reading this and posts their own little device

Hm.

A pair of Scissors vs (attempted) home made grinder.

Winner : A pair of scissors

Dude, shell out 8 bucks and get a cheap plastic one if you have to. Nothing you can make is really going to stand up to the test of time (unless your a master craftsmen, in that case you wouldn't be asking a bunch of stoners for advice, right?).

I have a Mendo Mulcher grinder, as well as a cheap plastic grinder, but I still find myself using tiny scissors when I want to break apart the bud delicately. Go get some lil' sewing scissors and you should be set.

You dont even have to 'touch' the bud while cutting it up. Just put it in a small container (like a small tin or bowl) and just cut it up as the bud sits in there. Easy cheesy.

meh i've actually being using the old scissors occasionally
i try to only use it for when i'm grinding the expensive stuff though, which is not too often
hey if it's cheap it doesn't need to stand the test of time, it'll just encourage me to eat more altoid sours.. if they still make those

anyways, i actually had to use the scissors last night (read my rolling machine post) and that was right after i really injured my right hand so it was pretty painful and difficult

it's not really something i NEED right now though, i'll probably get a small metal one sometime this month like i said(though now i may want one with a kief box)
it's just i posted it because i actually find it fun to do it yourself once in a while, especially if you come up with some new cheap easy way which can help poor stoners without headshops everywhere

as for the container, i use this soap stone sort of case to put it in while i'm cutting it up, the scissors just aren't made for stems though so you still have to kind've clean the shake by hand afterwards (atleast, if you're as picky as me you have to)

anyways, i was just at a headshop in the city the other day(i went during the gay pride parade, smart time to go to the city if you wanna just get in and get out) but everything there was wayyy too expensive (i was looking for a 1hitter/dugout, i was just about to buy this glass slider but it was $40, and the dugout i almost bought was too small for what i consider "1 hit")
i'll just wait till i'm in brooklyn again and just get one at the corner magazine/headshop
but i still want to make one myself, it's just fun the ritual of creating marijuana paraphernalia

Brads (short nails) and solder. If you don't want to use solder, quick-setting epoxy would do the job.

ahh here is where the solder gun makes its appearance as a suggestion

it's a really smart idea, like i mentioned earlier i actually had one i used to make a pipe before, but my mom thought i was making chemicals using it or something so she took it away many many years ago

quick setting epoxy sounds like what i was thinking of earlier, though this junk might run me about the same price as a grinder(of course it will come with other useful uses... mostly pranks)
anyways like most stoners i probably won't find the commitment to actually get all of this junk and start hacking away with tools and crap unless its a really simple and ghetto suggestion, but i do like the posting of suggestions for use by other, more adventurous and less lazy stoners
i'm also supposed to be packing for my week vacation while searching for apartment applications in chapel hill, north carolina.. so don't blame me for my lack of follow through :P

anyways i want more suggestions in my other topic about the joint roller but i guess i need people with rolling machine experience who have had the same issue as me (paper coming out the same end it gets inserted into)

edit: just noticed there is a home made forum *face palm* forgive me, mods please move topic at your free will
