Don't bother ripping them out... Just go into any hardware store and you can buy a pack of them for like $0.69.

If you actually took it from a faucet, then you can either heat it up a lot in an oven or other heating device (but not a microwave!!!) or hold a flame to it for a while. Algae can't be good to smoke, it just can't.

Also, make sure that your screen is either brass or steel. Those are the only two materials I've ever seen a screen made out of, most likely because they give off the fewest "nasties" when heated. If you're not sure, then you probably shouldn't smoke out of it.

Pebbles are good, but you should probably wash it in your sink and also try to burn off any junk from it.
