Upon reading hauptmann's post, I was reminded of the only problem with Bics. It's only minor, but I REALLY hate how you can't really see how much fluid is in your lighter. It's not important to some people, but there are times when I'm relying on my good ol' trusty lighter and it craps out on me. If you hold it up to light you can usually see the fluid line, but on some bics (Black, dark blue, green) even then you can't see the line. I wish they'd make transparent Bics or make a little fluid gauge thing on it. That'd be pretty swank.

At Mary Jane's, the local headshop around here, they have those nifty little cylinder lighters you see over in England and places like that. I don't know what makes them so special but they're an extra 2 bucks, which is why I never bought one. I might try one out next time I'm over...anyone ever use 'em?

yes, bics ARE tried and true. and theyll definitely get the job done. but i have found whether it be pen razor or lighter, this holds true. but, for all three, they are disposable, inexpensive, and lowest common denominater. for lighters, they arent adjustable (adjustable lighters can easily be made to any size fame you want, and i refuse to buy non-adjus), they have sofr wheels (you can flick without having a spark, as apposed to hard whells that almost cant flick at all) and since theyre disposable, you cant refill them. if your gonna go with a disposable lighter, id go with a scripto. yes, theyre also pretty low end, but theyre a much better deal then bics. ive never heard of zippos being bad with pipes, and my only experience with the pipe/zippo combo had no problems that i could see.

as for them breaking apart in your jeans, id durability is where bics shine. not only do they look like they can take a beating, but they actually deliver on that too. if the bic is falling apart in your jeans, you must be mistreating it, as well as having lots of other stuff in there. having other stuff in your pocket alone shouldnt make them fall apart.

just shake it next to your ear, if it starts to make less noise from splashing around, it's running low.

I'm with everyone here that likes disposable Bics. They're well made and they don't have anything that I don't need.
K.I.S.S. Keep it Simple, Stupid. It's an engineering term. All those fancy contraptions on scriptos are just more things that can go wrong on you at the wrong time I don't need an adjustable flame if my lighter has a perfectly sized flame already. I'll stick with bic.

Heh, thanks. I still find it kinda hard to judge but that'll help, since it doesn't look like Bic is approaching a lighter design revamping

I agree with the majority here....a Bic is the best value for the money. I've never had one "break" on me yet. They last until I either lose them (most often) or run out of fluid (rarely). AS DonkeyPunch mentioned in a diff. thread, the Djeep brand lighters are pretty reliable and long lasting as well. When you buy the cheap generic lighters, you get what you pay for. Theres a reason some places sell them for ridiculous prices like 5 for 2 bucks......they are utter and complete crap!

I've done this as a last resort, and unless you like your hits tasting like lighter fluid through and through, I'd avoid using a zippo. It adds too much of a chemical taste to the herb. It was almost as bad as the time I was desperate and lit my bowl with a match. I wasn't smart enough at the time to let the match burn for a second before touhing it to my bowl. That was the foulest taste EVER. I perfer to ENJOY smoking my herb, and the nastiness of lighter fluid and/or sulpher just ruins it for me. I'd perfer to not get high at all rather than inhale nasty tasting chemicals.

there was a period where I had to use matches likem 3 times... They blow, but they get the job done, if you let them burn a little before lighting up.

Yes, they do....but if your an idiot like i was the first time using matches, you get the worst tasting hit EVER....I'd rather smoke 3 bowl of resin back to back than take one toke of sulpher/phosphorus fumes from a match!
