The first one shows how to use it: It IS a postal scale, and measures in grams & oz (4 oz total). Clip the item you want to weight where the envelope is, and hold the unit up by the ring pull. The solid circle at the bottom (2nd pix) is the counterweight, and the whole thing is done!. Fast, easy and you can pretty much leave it out in the open, and it doesn't really look like "paraphenalla".

I would keep it in the trunk of the car if you need to transport it, in a small boxx with some blank envelopes, a few stamps, and a pad & pen. That way it can only look like for what it was intended for.

I believe the best scale is digital, if you can afford one. I know it is more acurate than a hand held scale. But, since I am just weighing my own personal bags, a hand held scale is ok for me.
