| Are they? If so can anyone explain and tell me which metal is the safest. brass, steel, etc. i know glass is the best but it can't be used with ground herb. BTW, does this apply when using vaporizers? or does your flame have to make contact with the screens in order for the toxic chemicals to be released. BUTANE. i've heard that its toxic but not when its being burned. when i use my vaporizer that's operated by lighter i spend quite a lot of time inhaling with the open flame of my BIC. : so i just wanted someone to clear this up as well. ![]() |

| You are the victim of urban legends. Screens don't produce toxic fumes. I prefer stainless steel screens because they're easy to clean with a propane torch. You can get brass screens hot enough to melt them or make them very brittle. [EDIT] Materials give off gases when they reach their boiling point. Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. The boiling point of copper is 1984ºF. The boiling point of zinc is 1665ºF. If the screen in your pipe approaches either of those temperatures, the weed above it would disappear in a sudden flash of combustion. Weed burns at 480ºF. Butane, like any hydrocarbon gas, is toxic. What you're inhaling when you use a butane lighter to light your pipe or joint is not burtane. It's what's left over after the butane burns: water vapor, carbon dioxide, and a very small amount of carbon monoxide.

| Good info to know. I knew screens were fine but I never thought about butane. |
