| the screen is fine - its the stainless steel body of the grinder (the whole thing is basically stainless steel sans the screen). the screen is fine actually. i scrubbed with my toothbrush- i bought a new one, and decided to dedicate my old one for that sorta stuff. The container i used was a little cube that has only stored thumbtacks in it and i washed them both before using either. |

| What's your grinder made out of? Can you post us a few pictures (close ups) showing the 'gunk' you are referring to? . . .

| ![]() Before they dried they were absolutely brand new looking-- SHINY! I'm thinking that I soaked them too long, and that i used the same isopropyl (didnt change it out for each piece) and that the accumulating residue stained onto the body. I think I'm gonna try soaking each piece in a separate, clean container with their own fresh isopropyl, and I'm only going to soak them for a few minutes. |

Sure seems odd to me. Stainless is a pretty resilant metal. Try this - fill a bowl with vintager and take one of your four pieces and soak it for 5 or 10 min. Doesn't work? Try dish liquid and baking soda, make not too fluid and soak. Doesn't work? Try virgin alcohol (emphasis on virgin). Doesn't work? Try a 30% solution of muriatic acid mixed with water but PAY CLOSE ATTENTION, and soak for only seconds, maybe 10 then remove and flush with water. AND PROTECT YOUR EYES AND LUNGS AT ALL TIMES - THE STUFF IS VERY NASTY. If that doesn't work you're likely dealing with an alien species and should immediately apologize for not understanding their language...

Won't take long and if you have no joy then go the next steps. If you get (and I can't imagine you will) to a point where you're considering Muriatic then give us hollar first. It's harsh and I'd want to make sure you do it right. Onward and upwards mate... ![]()

| ok so as of right now im testing out ideas with this: i took just one piece, grabbed a CLEAN bowl straight from my dishwasher, put one of the dirtier sections down inside and poured just enough isopropyl to submerge the section. I waited for 10 minutes and it is still dirty- i tried scrubbing with the toothbrush, and it had NO effect. Its been soaking for a little bit longer, and I'm going to give it up to a full hour. Im guessing at this point that the problem is/was a combination of A: the pieces soaking for a long time in the same container without a change in fresh isopropyl, because i notice that each piece looks slightly successively dirtier (in the picture you can see the screen piece looks the cleanest, as i soaked it first, but the other pieces are fairly thoroughly stained all over); and B: i considered the toothbrush- contaminent thing. I bought a new toothbrush when i bought the iso, but instead of using that (which i should have) i decided to use my old toothbrush (been using it for like 2 years so i sorta need a new one). I was going to soak the pieces without using the toothbrush, as a control-experiment, but i used it because i was so suprised the soaking isnt having any effect at all- i figured even if bacteria from the brush is the cause, the brush should still be able to scrub the crap off of it while it is still fresh in the soak- but even scrubbing hard with the brush is having NO effect. I might just leave it. I figure, if its stained so hard that soaking it in isopropyl wont clean it, then its probably safe to just use the way it is, figuring that its not going to rub off on the weed if 90% isopropyl isnt phasing it at all. |
