I have heard a lot about "4:20" and that thats when a lot of peopel like to toke up
but what does 4:20 really mean?
what is so symbolic about it?

can anyone help me with this?

Well, there are a couple of different stories. One of the most popular is that 420 is the police code somewhere for smoking pot. That's completely untrue, if anyone tells you that, laugh in there face.

The story I heard which I think is the most true is that it started with a bunch of high school stoners in the '70s. 4:20 became the time when they most often smoked, probably because it was just after school and just before work. These kids started using "4:20" as code for smoking. Eventually, one or a number of them became a deadhead and started following them around, and that's how it spread. Even today, 4:20 has a little more appeal to heads than it does to normal stoners, at least that's my perception. At Hookahville, the only time anyone ever knows what time it is is at 4:20, and you know because a mighty shout rings out from the masses. Hope this answers your question

Bailey, I heard that the Grateful Dead picked up on 420 and popularized it. I'm not exactly sure though...

But ya, the police code thing is total crap, cops usually start of with '10'.

There's another thread around here with a more in depth answer (or at least link to it, and with more info than what I said), but the Dead wouldn't have "picked it up", it was the deadheads that did. I don't know how familiar you are with the Dead and other bands of the same ilk (or at least with a similar phanbase), but deadheads would follow them from show to show, campground to campground, so it would be real easy for something like that to get started and passed around, so that's it's still with us today. I hope that helps a little bit at least.

4:20 started way before the Greatful Dead. It started during the rise of Rastafarianism. Ras Tafari Makonnen (a.k.a. Haile Selassie) was the man behind it all. An important historical event in the Rastafarian movement occurred when Haile Selassie visited Jamaica on April 21, 1966. This event resulted in two profound developments within the movement. First, Selassie convinced the Rastafarian brothers that they "should not seek to immigrate to Ethiopia until they had liberated the people of Jamaica." Second, from that time forth, April 21 has been celebrated as a "special holy day" among Rastafarians (Ibid, pp. 158, 160). April 20 was celebrated by Rastas following the creation of the holiday. April 20th is the Rastafarian equivalent of Fat Tuesday, or Mardi Gras. It makes sense that the Deadheads used the term though, as Haile Selassie was Bob Marley's closest friend. And Marley and the 'Dead have had a few run ins.

the 'police code' theory is not crap, i was arrested for 'possesion under 2oz.' and the crime code was 42064. they had to look it up in a big ass fukin book. coincidence? i think not.
