Call me ignorant, but what is the difference between a bong and a water pipe?

This one has confused me for a while.........

I didn't think there was one but someone correct me if i'm wrong.
I think Bong was just a easier way to say water pipe. They are both basically the same thing are they not?
Anyway that's what I thought but I could be wrong...

i could be wrong, but i think a water pipe is a pipe with a big bowl at the end for water, i cant explain it, it can also be basically a bong that you can pick up or something, and we all know what a bong is, bowl at the bottom, long tube

Headshops call bongs water pipes because the word "bong" is associated with marijuana use, so it's generally legally unsafe to them to associate "tobacco products" with marijuana....

but really bong and water pipe are synonymous.

I was in a headshop on high street that had a sign that said something like, "If you say the words: bong, marijuana, pot, bowl... you will be asked to leave." Then they had a whole collection of water pipes that had "bong" printed in large block letters on the side. It seems like their effort is kind of a waste.

Yeah dude. High St in Columbus, OH, right around OSU campus, is full if headshops. Theres so many of them. I was in the Waterbeds 'n' Stuff on High once with my bro and a friend of ours and my bro didn't see the sign and asked the guy about a bong, using thw word bong. The guy said what and then my bro saw the sign and changed his word choice. I've heard that some of those shops used to sell weed there and they got busted and some have signs saying the walls have ears. I'm not sure if thats true or not, probably not, but it'd be kind of cool wouldn't it? The headshop selling weed thing, not the getting busted thing.
