I always thought it was spelt marijuana, so why do some spell it marihuana?

Marijuana is english for weed.
Marihuana is spanish for weed. (you can also say Mota (mO-Tah)- that is to smoke weed in spanish)


Thats the only difference I know, I learned that from the mexican construction workers here...

Well, as a matter of fact the word "marijuana" comes from Mexico, but the correct spelling here in Mexico is "Mariguana", with a "G". The word "Marihuana" is used in Spain and some other parts of Latin America. And "Marijuana" is the correct spelling in English...

We probably use the "G" version of the name due to the way it is pronounced in Spanish, "ma-ree-goo-anna", as opposed to the English way.

Since gringos pronounced the "j" in marijuana...the English slipped in an "H" so they wouldn't sound silly making a sound like mary-chi-uana when they went to discuss it in scientific papers, or were buying it from their favorite rastaman or down in the 'hood or barrio...

Of course most folks just call it Pot.

Basically? It's two spellings of the same word.
