| my 15 year old sister has extreme depression and sometimes gets in such a bad way that she cuts herself, she has been through several types of antidepressants but still constantly feels horrible. Sharing the gift of marijuana with her is an idea that has been floating around the back of my head and i am heavily contemplating wether i should or not, she seems to have a generally negative view on drugs and has of course been bashed with propoganda at her school which is also incredibly religious. Im not sure exactly how i would approach her with the idea and if it might cause to much emotional shock to her, she has no idea i smoke. Id feel really bad if i got her into it and it had a bad affect or something. what do you guys think? |

You could bring up the subject about marijuana with her, then ask her if she would ever try it. Explain how it could help with depression and it's harmless. | |

| i appreciate that, thanks. Unfortunatley she might be prone to mental illness since she is so prone to depression, and i think that link even admits that weed can send a prone person over the edge |

| I really don't believe that it would be a negative influence on her. However, no one can say that with absolute certainty. Sounds like she has some problems. Weed and depression can be tricky. A bit now and again can and does alleviate the symptoms in many people. On the other hand, too much weed too often can exacerbate the symptoms.

| She's 15 and still a developing mind. A mind that obviously has a lot of issues on it's own, so rather than give it another one with marijuana, let her try to find her own way. A drug will never answer her questions and you don't want her learning early on to rely on something to feel stable. When pot stops working for her depression what is she going to turn to? There's a lot better feeling drugs out there than pot that'll make you forget about your depression in a second, lemme tell ya... She has some years to grow. I know most of us start around that age anyways but the importance of an expanding and growing mind cannot be ignored. The ability to sort out her own problems with the power of her own mind is another ability that will be a strong trait when she gets older. I know it's hard, and for her I'm sure it's even worse. But you have to find a way to help her realize that she's the only one in control of her own emotions and her own thoughts. Drugs will never change that, and you can't hide from your emotions your whole life. Once she realizes if she changes her train of thought, she also changes her mood and outlook on life, better days are to come. I wish you both luck.

| ^i concur. while weed may or may not help her with depression, 15 is pretty young to be smoking. i believe that the brain continues to grow until about the age of 25, and marijuana inhibits brain growth. thats what i've been told anyway.

| I know your trying to be helpful but I'd tell you not to. I've suffered from depression in the past and marijuana has never helped me. Just made things worse. It can easily just become another problem, especially for a fifteen year old. |
