| I'm pretty much sick of that word. It's such a widely used and abused label, it only hurts and damages decriminalization/legalization efforts for obvious reasons. Yeah to many more "mainstream" folks, alcohol isn't a drug. Caffeine is definitely not a drug, since it's completely legal and unregulated. And tobacco.....well sometimes it's called a drug because you smoke it but it can often avoid that label due to its legal status. Then you have marijuana. The marijuana leaf always seems to be the poster child for drugs. Like sometimes when people want to communicate "no drugs on these premises" or that they don't do drugs, they have the marijuana leaf with a crossed out sign over it. Oh yeah real clever, of course they would never put alcohol even though it's probably the most widely abused drug we have. No they won't put a needle or some powder symbolizing meth or heroin, which are the real other drugs of abuse besides alcohol. I mean yeah, when it comes down to it the war on weed is at the heart of the war on drugs. But damn, the more people refer to weed as a drug the worse the reputation of the plant becomes. Sure marijuana is a "drug" in the pharmacological sense....it alters functions of the mind or body.....but we all know that so many people refer to "drugs" as some evil toxic and addicting substance that leads to the destruction of individual, family, and society. Because you know, you can be telling someone about how much pot is so much more harmless, that it has produced no deaths, addiction is extremely rare, if not non-existent, ect. ect.......but then to just end the argument lay folks will randomly respond with "man drugs are bad". You know the whole "drugs" argument will randomly come up. It doesn't matter if there is almost no "drug" abuse with pot, it doesn't matter that pot became illegal because of William Randolph Hearst's trying to protect his timber profits. The fact that the reefer madness campaigns of old have instilled marijuana's association with "drug" is all what counts. I mean myself personally, I don't believe in bad or cuss words. Words are just words. But honestly, besides the N word (nig***)......the D word (Dr**) also gets to me especially when it's not used in any meaningful context. I say we do away with the term "drugs", especially when talking about marijuana and other soft psychoactives (yeah the term "psychoactive" works better). |
