I've smoked for 35 years. Off and On. Mostly On. I struggle with the thought of being addicted. I went to N/A to have support to stop. I felt embarrassed, saying "it's only pot". I felt I shouldn't be there with the other 'addicts' of whatever their addiction is. This group accepted me, and said, 'yes, you are addicted'. I went 7 months until I let my gaurd down....and here I am again. If I have it, I smoke it.

After a while it we began to meet up every night after my friend got off work becasue he used to get it by a guy near his workplace. Soon it was everynight. Now zoom 10 years later and things have esculated to a whole new level. One before work, on after work, one after dinner and about 2 or 3 more before bed. This has become a regular habbit which increases more with vacations and weekends. About 3 years ago I decided it was getting out of hand and I decided that I needed to quit. I lasted about 2 days before I relapsed. The next time I quit was for about a week becasue I though it had somthing to do with my slow thyroid. After a week I replases and started on the daily habbit. I knew it was getting out of hand so I decided to cut down at least if I couldn't stop, and that worked about pretty good. I stated using a small pipe rather than to smoke huge cannons. But in the end I began to feel alienated from my friends so I began to hang aournd them again and thus the cycle continued. About 10 months ago I decided to move to China for employment purposes and also to give myself a chance to clean up my act. It was working great for the first 4 months, I didn't have any cravings at all, only mild ones that were far and few. After 4 months I took a trip back to Canada and smoked my brains out. I enjoyed being high, but at the same time I felt I needed to get back to work. Things were working pretty good until I met up with a friend of mine in Hong Kong who is a regular stoner. I would vist her once every few months and have a few sesssions thinking that they were perfectly harmless. It turns out that those far and few between sessions ignited a craving inside me that is incredibly stong. I have had dreams of buying or smoking marijuana for the past 4 days straight. I find myself thinking of ways to either find it or smuggle it in which is incredibly dangerous in these parts of China. I recently confessed to my girlfriend that I do just to test if she could find me some, it turn out she had a bad reaction to it so I guess that is helping me come to my senses. I still talk to people back home on line and they are still smoking like there is no tommorow. A few of thing talking bull**** about cutting down but it's all talk and no action. So if you asking me if it's a addictive, I would say yes it is incredibly addictive. If you smoke it daily for more than a year, it is increidly hard to break it off. Or maybe it's just in the genes and alot of people I know have this gene that craves it.
That's just nonsense. Pure and simple. Period. Am I addicted? Not a chance in hell. You want to know what IS addictive? Anyone who smokes cigarettes in here will know what I'm talking about. If you've never smoked cigarettes and you think cannabis is addictive you really have no ethos in this argument...I've had no problems quitting for months at a time, and during those times no problems sleeping or eating.

Having a strong craving for something doesn't necessarily make you "a bad person".

If you crave something that is highly addictive, like tobacco, then the craving comes from withdrawl, i.e. physical addiction. I believe that when a person decides they want to live rather than die, then their addiction to tobacco can be brought under control.

Then there's psychological addiction I suppose you could say. MJ has been proven not to be physically addictive so if one is "addicted" it would have to be considered psychological.

That's where the gray area begins for me. Mainly I "crave" a way to survive that doesn't involve slow death. I want to feel I'm alive through the process of survival (to which we're all addicted). I "crave" less stress in my life. I am addicted to anything that brings me that in a non-invasive non-destructive way.

Of course its hard to stay outta harms way when my life liberty and pursuit of happiness is illegal. That's the only problem I can see with it.

Im not sure if you've smoked before but that....I think is BS. Smokers know that cigarettes are killing them. It's written all over the packets! The thing is, what the goverment dosn't know is that nicoten addiction is all about FEAR. Thats right FEAR. Fear of not having another smoke for the rest of your life, NOOOOO!!!!. fear Having to watch other smokers and get major jelous. NOOOO!! Fear people, and fear causes the addiction to get even worse and there for...... you light up! Oops just realised I'm not really in the right thread for this. Sorry Rick

Anyway I've voted yes I am addicted to smoking MJ............... but not as much as growing it!

Talking Solitary

I have been smoking for over 30 years, have had many dry periods, children in the house, unavailablity, etc. I never had physcial withdrawal symptoms. I smoked cigarettes for 20 years, had lots of withdrawal, physcial, emotional and psychological, this was definitely an addiction!

I believe if your smoking interfers with your life, don't want to work and or play, family time etc. you should look at your use. Addiction is a very personal thing! My friends are now taking artifical hormones to keep them happy, sleeping pills to get thru the night, steriods to cure whatever, anything that is advertised on tv that they "think" they need, tell me what is worse?

I have smoked tons of cigs and I can go days without it. I'd pick weed any day over cigs. Maybe thats just me, but I have no purpose to decieve you.

That doesn't really tell me much. Do you mean, "I have been smoking cigarettes for more than 2 years" or "I smoke socially when I'm with friends or when I'm drinking" or "If a friend has a cigarette I'll bum one, but I don't buy packs" or "I have only been smoking for 6 months." Elaborate. I would pick cannabis over tobacco anyday too, but even when I quit smoking cigarettes for 1 day it's hard not to take even a drag. I can pass up on a blunt no problem, or a bong hit, or a pipe, or a joint; but if someone lights up a cigarette and I'm in the car, I'll either light one up too, bum one, or at least take a drag. If you cannot see the difference between the addiction a cigarette has and the "addiction" cannabis has then perhaps other underlying issues are persistent in your life...who knows, I'm not you.

I still smoke cigarettes. Have since 1974. The key is having it under control. I didn't mean total quitting. I like a cig when I'm high. It seems to keep my head from floating away. But I don't just lite up every 5 minutes, big diff. I smoke maybe one whole cig a day (broken up and re-rolled). The main difference between now and then is that I use tobacco, it doesn't rule me. When I run out of dope, I don't want tobacco because if I'm not high it just seems like suffocation.

I guess I shouldn't say that cig smokers all want to die, but I can't help but think that someone who smokes till they get sick should look at getting counseling for depression (and grow some good weed

I'm just curious....and I'm not stating an opinion about addiction one way or another, but I have a question:

Most here have focussed solely on physical addiction and ignored physchological addiction. Medicine, even those who support MMJ recognize psychological addiction as being real.

Is the focus on only the physical side because you don't believe in pychological addiction?
