i just noticed that when i smoke from my pipe and dont think about it, i dont actually make a seal around the end of the pipe with my lips. air gets in as well as smoke.

i tried sealing my lips and, of course, got a MUCH harsher hit.

so i wanted to see the general consensus on this: do you make a complete seal with your lips around the end of your pipe when you smoke, or do you let some air in to 'soften' the hit?

well...yes i do at the start of the hit.... but at the end I drag a little air to keep from coughing so hard

It really depends on how harsh your weed is.

If it is really harsh it is better to take a really slow drag and then intake it with a little air and then do this repeatedly until you can't intake anymore.

If it is really smooth just keep your lips sealed and take a really good hit. Then let in the air or let off your carb to clear it out.

The problem with the sealing meathod is that if the smoke is too concentrated you will not absorb all of the THC in the smoke and thus you will be wasteing it.

I prefer the first meathod with a little bit of modification but it is too hard to explain here so anyway, bye.

That can't be true. The smoke still ends up in your lungs and gas exhange occurs. Why would it matter how concentrated it is?

Let me put it in perspective.

There is so much smoke with so much THC in it that you would have to hold your breath for a very long time to absorb all of the THC. I am not saying it would be impossible to absorb it all; just a lot harder.

Simply because usually, the more concentrated the smoke is the harder it is to keep it in. The more concentrated that the smoke is the longer you have to hold it in to absorb all of the THC in it.

So Weiisky, I am sorry I didn't explain myself fully. I didn't mean it was impossible to do just harder to do. That is why there COULD be but usually isn't a problem. It is just that for newbie smokers it is harder for them, usually, to hold the smoke in as long.

the weed doesnt seem to be harsh on my throat at all anymore, prolly cus i have always sealed my lips, i kind of like the burn

Actually, most of the gas exchange occurs in the first couple of seconds. Holding in for longer only increases CO. Concentration just means more THC, not more difficulty in gas exchange. Once it's in your lungs, you're pretty much set after 3-5 seconds.

Higher Logic

Correct, more than 85% of the THC that is in the smoke you inhaled is removed by your lungs within the first 3 seconds of taking a drag, the rest is a variety of other chemicals, which is why holding a hit in is quite pointless.
