Of course marijuana is not harmless, but when compared to things like alcohol & tobacco and the number of deaths associated with the two it does seem relatively harmless.

What does being harmless have to do with being legal? Alcohol and tobacco are legal. Together they kill 600,000 Americans every year.

Wow.. that is a very ignorant statement. It being illegal has nothing to do with it being harmful.. sure it's not good for your lungs if you smoke it, but studies have shown time and time again that it's significantly less harmful than alcohol (something that is ingrained into our society as acceptable..).

Being harmful has nothing to do with why it was made illegal. The hemp plant was made illegal because it was a threat to the textile and pharmaceutical industries. The whole "Reefer Madness" craze came about because the government and big businesses knew that unless the people were scared to death of this plant, they would never accept it being criminalized, so they started a fear campaign (against a fucking plant) and convinced everyone that marijuana would turn their children into whores and criminals, until the public demanded it be made illegal.

"A great way to pass time and get out of reality"? If that's all it is to you, then more power to you. Just don't come crying to us when someone calls you a stereotypical stoner.

Perhaps the single most important thing I have learned this semester was in my Ethics class. It is simply this: Just because something is that way, does not mean it ought to be that way. Just because marijuana is illegal does not mean it should be or ought to be. More pointedly though, I believe that marijuana is probably harmful to the human body but very minimally. Think of how many people have died from alcohol and tobacco products as Buzzby said. We have much more dangerous legal substances out there and the same rule applies to them as well; just because they are legal does not mean they ought to be. In the same sense; it does not follow that a legal substance is safe to consume, just as it does not follow that an illegal substance is unsafe to consume.
