| "The West Wing" is one of the most popular shows on television. On it, President Josiah Bartlet (played by Martin Sheen) has multiple sclerosis but it has always been in remission. In last night's episode ("A Change is Gonna Come", 12/01/2004) he had a relapse and from the previews for next week it looks like a bad one. The question is, is the American public ready to see a story in which the President of the United States uses medical Marijuana in order to be able to keep doing his job? Should the writers make it part of the story line?

| From a network perspective. It would be very risky to make marijuana the drawing point of its attention. It sure would rustle everyones attention on the subject though. Dont know how youd be able to persuade them to make that part of the storyline. intresting idea.

| It would definitely shake things up, that's for sure. A risky move as well, I'll grant, but then isn't it the risky moves that pay off the most in the end?

| Should the subject of medical marijuana be brought up on West Wing? That would depend on how it were presented. If it is described in an alarmist, reefer madness way,I would say NO! If they use factual information gathered from an actual MS patient such as Montel Williams and incorperate it into the script, sure. I think it would be a great idea. And no, Williams himself would not need to be mentioned by name. It is a fictional program.I'm smoking joe and you're not! |

| They have already had an episode where legalizing marijuana was discussed in a favorable light (logically), but showing how it would never happen (politically). When I get my DVDs of all the seasons, I will be able to point to which one it was. ![]()

| It would be risky, and they'd have to be carefull as to how they did it, while still keeping the show serious, and realistic.

This implies that the president has no particular prejudice against the weed but recognizes the political realities. That was, of course, in his first term. Now he's in his second term and doesn't have to worry about getting reelected. His MS is no secret anymore. If FDA-approved meds don't get him back on his feet perhaps Marijuana could. If I were writing the episode I'd have it worked out that Marinol (the second-to-last choice) would do the job. That way the Prez could realistically stay in office while still pointing out the efficacy of Marijuana and its components. | |

| If I were writing the episode, I'd have it worked out where the President attempts to get marijuana legalized because of his own illness, is impeached, and is forced to flee to Canada where episode after episode shows the horrible suffering of American medical marijuana patients deprived of their medicine and how that the former US President is only able to survive in dignity due to the hospitality and generosity of Canadians. But that's me. ![]() |
