I don't think "The Summer of Love" is a good "selling point" for the legalization of marijuana. Nixon started the War on Drugs as a means of fighting the counterculture that started up in the late 60s. "Drugs turn you into a filthy, profane, sacrilegious, unpatriotic, sexually perverted, promiscuous, parasite, communist."

If we want to see marijuana legalized, we need to promote the image that marijuana users are just like everyone else except for their preference for a different recreational drug.

The image of The Summer of Love in the minds of old counterculture types is much more positive than the actual summer of 1967 ever was.

I see your point. The image itself is more positive than what it maybe was. And unfortuneately all I have are images to reflect on seeing as how I was not alive yet. So I'm trying not to speak as if I was there; for all I have are observations

I guess I'm trying to say that the Summer of Love brought people together; it united people. And through many contributing factors, marijuana was one of them. And I feel it would be great to unite people for marijuana; but through knowledge and understanding.

I'm not trying to say lets do the Summer of Love all over again. I was blown away when I learned about all the homelessness, hunger, drug problems, and crime that happened too. All the influx of people showing up, a lot of them kids, not having a clue how to even take care of themselves and what they were getting into.

I just think it might be great to come together with such spirit again.

Also I thought it a bit ironic both being decade years; 70 & 30. I think I mentioned the Summer of Love too because I read (on here I think) how the 60's generation are returning back to cannabis now to relieve the aches and pains of aging.

But every positive has a negative. So if we can learn from our past, we may better ourselves by it

i would like to say yes that it will be legalized in years soon to come, but honestly the truth is that no one knows what the future holds. This issue is an issue becasue when i sit at home and watch tv i always see anti-weed commercials and such. This just proves to me the ignorance of this government with their false propoganda.

There is one of two possible approaches i see:

1. We hope and hope that something will change the fate of this fight in our direction or....

2. We use the education and resources at our disposal and band together to make a difference and change the fate of this fight oursleves.

Peace to all,

Tim

I think it will for sure but it could be a while, every generation gets more and more progressive so it's just a matter of time.

If that were true, we'd be a whole lot more progressive than we are. Liberalism and conservatism go in cycles. The most progressive time in US history was the late 60s and early 70s. We've gone a long way downhill since then. The US is run by fundamentalist conservative Christians, the rich are getting richer, the poor are getting poorer, and the middle class is working its ass off trying to pretend that it's more affluent than it really is.

We can't lie around complacently, figuring that it has to get better. We have to apply ourselves to make it get better.

Yes, its a harmless enough drug. Once they get the right people into it, which seems to be happening a lot more lately.

i dont think it will. theres too much money to be made out of the criminalisation of cannabis. cannabis being a 'drug' and causing 'health problems' is just propaganda spread to make people think its evil (see the film "reefer madness" they released back when marijuana was made illegal). if everyone knew it was a harmless plant that instead of inducing health problems, can actually benefit a lot of conditions, everyone would call for change and itd be legalised. from there on, itd be a small jump for us to start using hemp as a material (paper, rope, clothing), which would cut into those big corporate companies profits.

okay ive just realised i might not seem to be making much sense. ill just send you in the direction of jello biafra and his spoken word albums, mainly the track "grow more pot". basically all im saying is the legalisation of our beloved leaf, is dependent on much more than proving its a harmless plant, hence why i dont believe it'll be legalised

Considering I am only 18, I would like to believe that marijuana WILL be legalized in my lifetime. I think eventually, the blind political powers of this country will see the amount of money and law enforcement they are wasting by cracking down on marijuana. We just need a couple bright heads to take a powerful seat in the gov't and get the ball rolling.
