Default The Cycle of Power

I believe in 2008, the cycle of power will change to either a third party or back again to the Democratic party.

Right now the GOP has a foothold nearly every state, legislative, judicial, and executive level so I honestly don't see a lot of legalization or decriminalization efforts for the next four years--irregardless of GOP moderates such as Gov. Arnold Schwarznegger.

However, I can see the Democratic party learning from their mistakes and courting the South more and having a stronger, less boring, and more enigmatic candidate for 2008.

I can also see more third party voters who having been through two difficult elections fed-up with both majority parties and voting for a third party if there is one which can get enough support.

It will definately be interesting.

I think it's a serious mistake to assume that the GOP has no interest in decrim and/or drug law reform. There's a substantial libertarian wing to the GOP, and more than a few Republican magazines favor marijuana decrim.

The process of drug law reform can only be helped by courting and advocating such a policy to Republicans, as well as others. It can never hurt to broaden our base of supporters, and it'll only hurt us if we keep up the knee-jerk anti-Republicanism.

The history of successful political movements is one of mass appeal - not one of fringe politics.

Well . . .

It's refreshing to see SensimiliaStreet thinks we're still going to be having elections in 2008. I'm glad someone does.

Decrim is a bad policy. It simply makes it easier for police to ticket users that they may otherwise let go. If I have a single joint on me I'm figuring the cop may leave me alone because it's not worth the paperwork, or maybe they feel it's not worth giving a citizen a drug record.

On the other hand, if a cop knows that every time they catch someone with weed they can hand them a $200 ticket . . . what's to stop them?

Full legalization is the only answer. Anything less continues the perception that smoking cannabis is somehow a deviant or dangerous behavior.

IT will never hurt us to fight the likes of GWB and his supporters. If republicans are content with lending their name to such people they have to expect the negative reaction. Neocons are the new republicans, and there's not much republican about them.

What about when some of his supporters favor full legalization? The National Review endorsed Bush in 2004, and it's official policy towards mj is legalize it. Now, I can see how the religious right wouldn't get along with our views - crap, they don't even get along with a large swath of the GOP, but they're tolerated.

The Republican Party, like the Democratic Party, is composed of a whole pisspot of competing ideas. Why not push for the libertarian wing among them to gain some ground in the party?

Ok, short of bearing arms against those who oppose us, it would seem to me that broadening our appeal across the political spectrum would be a smart thing to do.

I don't know what makes you think it will hurt us to keep up knee-jerk anti-republicanism when most republicans, at least the top ones, probably support or supported our governments multi-million dollar campaign to try to equate buying marijuana to supporting terrorists. I sincerely believe that the republican party will never endorse the legalization of marijuana, regardless of how nice we are to them. Peace, HN-

If you think I'm advocating a policy of "nice-nice" and ass kissing to Republicans, or ANY politician, who believes in stern anti-mj enforcement, you'd be completely wrong. And apparently missed where I've already said as much.

You sincerely believe this based upon a series of "probably's"? They "probably" support, or at least used to support, anti-drug campaigns? Well, no ****. Show me a senior-level politician who hasn't, and that has a chance in hell of actually winning.

MJ legalization is slowly gaining steam in the GOP. No matter your dislike of some or most of their other policies, it should be acknowledged that this is a Good Thing - for "us" and "them."

Crap, people, having a few allies in the GOP is a GOOD THING! How are we NOT realizing this?

Right on, Mike.

There are a few out there now and just like any other movement, keep on keeping on as it gains momentum.

To me, and I may be wrong, the rabid anti-republican sentiment is akin to the anti-american sentiment. Just because the most visible/important/in charge of them believe a certain way (and are mass marketing that viewpoint to the citizens) doesn't mean I am going to generalize that they all feel that way.

Those that see the Republicans as "neo-cons" or whatever is the current buzzword should also realize it won't stay that way. Just as 30 years ago, the Republican party had a different viewpoint, in 30 years it will have changed again.

Maybe the Whigs will make a comeback! Or the Marijuana Party will rise up. Or the libertarian section of the Republicans/Democrats will gain control.

All I know is nothing is a vacuum. Change occurs and where there is the possibility of change, there is hope.

It's been a good year.
