I don't know what arrangements Marijuana.com has made with its advertisers, but generally advertisers pay a per-click fee to the site where the advertisements appear in addition to any flat fee they might pay to have the ads appear.

Ads are generally tracked by any of the following:

Cost Per Click (CPC) - The cost to the person when someone clicks on an ad
Cost Per Action (CPA) - The cost to the person for someone joining
Cost Per Duration (CPD) The cost to the person for the time limit of the ad
Cost Per Thousand (CPM) - The cost to the person per 1000 ad exposures (impressions)
Cost Per Sale (CPS) - The amount of sales you make from a CPL or CPA
Cost Per Lead (CPL) - The cost to the person when someone joins, different from a CPA in that useful information is returned, e.g. a lead.

CPC, CPM, and CPD are the most common way of keeping track, and I believe Marijuana.com uses the CPM model (since it would be the industry standard, or rather, the most common out of the "most common" ones), meaning the more clicks you get, the more you pay. We might use a little bit of CPD as well.

CPA would be good for like referral programs, like the things where it asks you to sign up and get something for free, but only if you get like 50 people to click on a link that has your referral ID.

And actually, now that I think about it, we would be running CPTM, or Cost Per Thousand Targeted, since the ads are for a specific audience, e.g. marijauna users.
