I personally don't think it is a gateway drug. However, I would definatly try other drugs at least once just to see what it is like.

Maybe the open-minded personality is what leads to other drugs and not the drugs themselves.

I predict this thread will be closed in about 5 min.....but if it isn't i would say it is a gateway drug simply because the kind of people that deal in illigal sales and use of marijuana are more likely to be involved in other things.

Yes yes, do erase those. And I think that it isnt a gateway drug, but think much the same thing that you do...as in the open mindedness of marijuana enthusiasts could lead to them trying new drugs, but it isnt becuase of the mary jane.

I think it is a gateway drug, and it has worked on me. But maybe it was cigarettes or alcohol that got me wanting weed in the first place.. so yea, it is one.

The abridged definition of a gateway drug is a drug which eventually leads you to other drugs because you crave an even greater high. For example, if you smoked weed but felt that the high from smoking wasn't strong enough, then you tried off-topic syringe liquids.

With that said, marijuana is not a gateway drug.

Just because you have to purchase marijuana from shady characters doesn't make it a gateway drug. Unfortunately, your definition requires a person to purchase marijuana from a seller. What if someone grows it themself for personal use? Does that make it not a gateway drug?

Most people try marijuana in their teens, and later decide to grow it. People who have never tried marijuana before don't just decide to grow it. I don't think it is the "seeking better high" that leads people to try other drugs, its curiosity mixed with easy access to them.

** oh and i make it a priority not to buy from shady characters because i think its those shady characters that are giving a bad name to weed.

If it's not the "seeking a better high" then it's not the drug that is the gateway, it's the curiosity and easy access to them.

true... but if someone never approaches marijuana and never hang around kids that smoke it, they would never be exposed to any access to drugs...I don't think marijuana directly is a gateway drug, but the atmosphere it creates of illegality attracks other illegal drugs.
