A symbol is only important if it's the only symbol. I wouldn't burn the only flag or the only Bible if there were only one. I... just can't believe how incredibly stupid people are. Yes, stupid, idiotic people feel bad about burning some cloth or some paper. I tell you, if the Lord is up there, he's laughing his ass off at such stupidity. Let's say I wrote a great love letter once and I decide I want to keep it because I still love whoever I love. This letter is symbolic of our love and I would be pretty damn annoyed if something happened to it. But let's say I make 50,000,000 copies of this letter. I think I'd be pretty comfortable with burning one of those copies if I had a reason to, like just for fun.

Ok, so you're calling me stupid and idiotic huh? Hey, opinions are like a$$es....everyone has one. Just because mine is different than yours, doesnt give you the right to mock the way I feel about things. I dont see eye to eye with a good many things I read here, but that doesnt give me the right to flame people who don't agree with me. No, you didnt mention my name, but you took what i wrote and basically said only stupid people would feel that way, so I feel justified in believing it was directed right at me. I'm going to end it there, because anything else I write will likely end up as a childish flame, and I dont want to sink to your level just yet.

Hey, buddy, watch the name-calling. Your ignorance is showing.

Now, my rant. Who gave you the right to decide what's important? Do you have any idea what the flag represents to people? Not just freedom, not just liberty, not just all these intangibles that people feel America is all about.... It represents people. Close family and friends who died in war, in the line of duty, people trying to save others who lost their lives, emergency services personnel killed serving the public. People associate the flag with many things, and for you to just brush that aside and call people stupid shows an incredible lack of respect for your fellow man. Is burning a cross harmless? There are zillions of crosses in the world, so one can't possibly be important, can it? If I burn one in my backyard, why do people get so mad? The swastika is a symbol as well, but just because it is one of many doesn't mean that it holds no value to people, positive or negative.

You have every right to burn a flag, a bible, or even a copy of the Constitution, if you want. You will get a point across by doing it, but it will hardly be the point you intended to get across.

Seems like a silly thing, but the mj.com group of sites calls itself a Community of Compassion. Your post, Mishiro, shows that you definitely do not subscribe to that. You should definitely try to look outside the box of your own perspective and try to put yourself in the shoes of those you say are "incredibly stupid".

As far as your comment about the Lord laughing with you at all that "stupidity?" Maybe. More likely, he would be incredibly saddened by your views on your fellow man. But that's just one agnostic man's opinion.

Touchy people... I meant I believe it is stupidity, not that the people themselves are idiots (even if I made it seem otherwise). I do idiotic things all the time, as do most people. Hell, smoking a bible blunt is stupid. I have enough respect for my fellow man to respect people even when they do what I feel is incredibly stupid on a regular basis. And I think my ignorance is not showing, after all, I'm not ignorant to the scheme of things beyond "God and country", and the divine word (written and edited by men no greater than myself).

Hey, I just can't deny that I feel it is a stupid thing to worry about, just like the government's fear of legalizing weed is stupid.
Just because something based on religion isn't destructive (like genocide, war, etc.) doesn't mean it can't be incredibly STUPID.

And this is where we pronounce "tomato" differently and go off on our ways.

this is where the quote, "i dont agree with what your saying, but i will defend to the death your right to say it" really kicks in. I dont agree with people defiling other peoples sacred symbols such as bibles, crosses, the american flag or a copy of the constitution. However this is a free country and they do have every right to do it. But, you still dont really have the right to get mad at someone for doing such a thing. Think if people went around with swastikas crossed out or burned everybody would think that they were giving the right message right? Well Mr. NeoNazi would probably not agree, but he really doesnt have any say to get angry does he? Thats the peoples opinion. The same thing applies to someone burning the flag or smoking the bible, you can disagree with them, but you dont really have the right to get real angry and rant and rave at them do you?

p.s. i know that a lot of the vandalism to holy symbols is more out of ignorance and stupidity than a personal opinion, i was just giving a scenario that many people tend to be very self righteous in.

Sure you do. You have every right to be angry. Very angry. Overly angry, even, and self-righteous, sanctimonious, condescending, and whatever else you feel like feeling. You just have no right to prevent them from doing it.

Agreed 100%.....such actions are usually committed TO make people angry, and TO Get a response from people....I believe in freedom just as much as the next guy, and as long as people aren't hurt or injured (phsyically, that is)by one's actions, I have no right to deny them their freedom to do as they please.

And Mishiro, you can believe that something is stupid. I have absolutely no problem with whatever your personal beliefs may be. I wouldnt want to be told I HAD to believe in this or believe in that myself. However, while you may feel as if something is stupid, i wouldnt recommend using phrases like "Yes, stupid, idiotic people feel bad about burning some cloth or some paper." That is mocking not only the person's beliefs, but the person themselves, and that just isnt right. I NEVER denied you the right to do as you pleased, as I only expressed my personal views on the subject, as the origianl post asked us to. I was less than happy to be called stupid and ignorant because of my views. You can say my feelings towards the flag or the Bible are stupid. However, I don't consider YOU stupid just because I disagree with you, and i expect the same consideration from you. Attack my point of view all you want....but attacking me as a person because of my views is out of line, disrespectful, and might I say.....just more than a little ignorant.
