I'm going with Thomas Jefferson, writer of our Declaration of Independence. He and George Washington grew "hemp" on their farms as did many others up until the 1840's.

Jefferson states pickin out the females from the hemp crop and drying them in the dark attic in his journal. Which is why he gets my vote.
