yes. these health balls date back to the 1300s, but didn't start out with the 8. the 8 ball version was made simply because of resemblence to an 8 ball, for us westerners

Actually, only when turned sideways they are. Mathematically speaking, the ∞ is representative of the infinity symbol. We studied this in one of my math classes, sort of.

It's mainly used to describe a type of arithmatic progression. Basically, in both real and complex analysis- the ∞ symbol represents unbounded limit. It shows up a lot in topology, or net mathematics. Basically when you have an infinite solution the limit that a function f is said to approach at x = a when f (x) is larger than any preassigned number for all x sufficiently near a, or 2^(N-1) - 1 (I think...is that right..?)

God how boring. eightballs are much cooler.

Ahhh get those functions off these forums. Those things confused me so much I almost failed math 12 as a result. I can't understand them if my life depends on it. Gotta go with the 8 ball on this poll.

Yo Titts, did you fail that math class??? haha, just kidding. You could have really explained that a lot easier. But it still doesn't answer the question of the ball... or is your answer, "depends on how you hold it" haha.

By the way, is it bad that I'm majoring in math at a University renowned for it's math, and difficulty in math

I didn't retain anything I learned from my math classes. I'm suprised I passed them all.

But honestly, who knows. I don't know much about health balls, and if they are Chinese then the symbol could have a totally different meaning all together.

edit: THC fiend, that's awesome. I've always envied people who can deal with majoring in mathematics. Pretty impressive.

is it a "lucky eightball" cuz in chinese culture eight is a lucky number? or is it just bungled marketing on behalf of the webiste mishiro linked to, and it is in fact meant to be an infinity symbol?

if it is in fact an infinity symbol, it's a pretty contrived bit of eastern mysticism considering that "infinity" and it's mathematical symbology (regarding which i am completely clueless ) were invented by a westerner in the past century or so...who bares some relation to me, if my father is to be trusted in his senility.

either way, these are not mere trinkets. i dunno if skfan's familiar with their usage, but you're basically meant to roll them around each other on the palm of your hand using your thumb and fingers. i believe they're spheres of enamel with a metal bearing inside, so they should make little tinkling noises when you do so. they're meant to reallign your energies, or some such shit.

best usage i've found for em thus-far is on the tail-end of heavy come-downs, where you just need a repetitive activity to focus your zombified mind upon. still no closer to enlightenment though, folks.

Actually, they have come in quite handy for me while I have quit smoking off-topic cancer sticks. Helps me with my craving to have something in my hand. I didn't know what they were called, but knew what they were used for. Yes, they do tinkle when I roll them around in my hands. They come in quite useful. I called them trinkets b/c I didnt' know what they were really called. I did know what they were used for.

Thanks everyone for helping me on this one. I will let the hubby read this thread and see what he comes up with. Me being the stubborn wife...they are Chinese Health balls with 8's on them...made to look like an 8 ball.

I have a pair of those too, except the balls are shiney bare metal, with a dragon engraved on one, and a rooster on the other. If those are what I think they are (meditation balls), then it would most likely be an infinity sign on it, if not another symbol.
