I've always thought dreads looked really cool and wanted them, I just don't have the balls to try and get some because if it doesn't work then you have to completely cut your hair and I would really hate to have to grow my hair out again.

i forget, like 7-9 inches probably, but they only came out to be like 2-3 inches long at the most. i would say wait until you have at least a foot of hair.

i don't want to hijack this thread but i just want to say to you and to anyone else who didn't like my comment that i was just expressing my opinion. i don't know the history behind dreadlocks nor do i honestly care, based on what i've seen, i just think that they don't look good on white people, sorry if this offended you. but honestly i don't think it's something to be offended about, i was just sharing my opinion, and i definitley do not consider myself a "reverse racist"

Eh it just depends on how they are done. I'll admit I see more black people who have good looking dreads than white people, but I was at this one music festival and I saw alot of white people who had nice dreads, they just need to be done right. I've also seen white people who have shit ass dreads and I'd say that said people are likely what cause you to have that opinion.

oh, another thing: i wasworking at the soup kitchen and saw the... I don't even know the word... gnarliest? dread ever. dread. singular. some crack-head looking guy had one solid dread down to his waste, it was like 8" across and 2" thick.
how thick are yours jack? sorry about all the questions, i'm just really anticipating getting them

i have dreads! i had to section my hair off into little sections with rubberbands, then backcomb my hair for EVER, until it became matted. then i put a rubberband on the bottom. i left them like that for 3-4 months, and most of the rubberbands brkoe off and ive got pretty tight dreads...some are loose on the ends because the rubber bands fell off too soon but i LOVE them

Actually there are other ways to take 'em out. Of course shaving your head is the fastest way, but there are other ways too (unless you've had them in for decades). There are even special products around just for removing dreads and some people soak them in VO-5 conditioner then brush them out.

Is there a "point of no return" with dreads? How long is too long before one isn't able to get rid of them w/o shaving the head? Anyone know?

not that thick, mostly 1/4 to 1/2 inch in diameter, but i have a few that are an inch or two in diameter

i have heard of friends of friends who had them for a few years and still got them out somehow, but those were always girls who didn't want to shave their heads. I think this was usually accomplished by lots of brushing over many weeks. I would say after 4-6 months it will probably be really hard and painful to get them out without cutting them. I had dreads once in the past and only had them for 3-4 months and it would have been really hard to have gotten them out without cutting them (which i did). my dreads that I have now had for 4 years I don't think i could ever get out, they are really tight and i have no idea how i would go about getting them out. i luckily want to have a shaved head after i get rid of them, and it is really the only way to get rid of them. plus, if you did take them out i think you hair would be really gross and unhealthy.
