i've never had dreads, but many people have told me i should get them. to the best of my knowledge i think it's just extremely knotted hair, maybe with some beeswax in it, i'm not entirely sure though. anyway, i think unless you are of african american descent, you should stay away from dreadlocks. this is just my opinion, something about white people with dreads just rubs me the wrong way i guess.

i am white and i have dreads. I will have had them for 4 years as of march 1st, but I am also going to cut them the second week of march. it's going to be real weird, i haven't cut my hair at all in more than 5 years. I really like them but they have run their course for me. they are definitely more sketchy and bring more attention from the anti-drugs crowd (though I was never arrested when i had them, but i do live in the liberal Boston). I started them with dread bees wax, but then just let them grow after that. it takes a good 6 or so months for them to actually look like dreads. they can get annoying at the beginning but then they are very no work at all. makes your head itch sorta and is definitely hot in the summer. i am also 22 and wouldn't start them/get them this late in my life (unless in the far future i can own a head shop or something.. maybe then. i also haven't ever had to get a job myself (were given them by friends) with my dreads and this is another reason i cut them. i recommend them if you want them but they take a lot of work and dedication at the beginning. and now my dreads are mostly more than a foot long, but i always wear them tied back in a rubber band. you also need pretty thick hair to be able to do it. good luck, and ill answer any other questions you have.

and dreads definitely have history with African Americans/Rastas, but they were inspired in that group by Hindus who worshipped Shiva, smoked cannabis religiously, and had dreads. the religious use of cannabis and the dreads transferred to the rastas through the interactions of the groups during the slave trade. these indian holy men are called sadhus. I'm not saying I'm a Hindu mystic, but marijuana has a definite part in my spiritual life, and not only bob marley and the rastas had dreads.

The Romans, when they invaded Britain, described fighting the "snake-haired" men, too. Dreads are the oldest discernable hair-style known to man. Which is why statements like this:

really irk the fuck out of me. The Rastafari are only the latest in a long line of cultures to don dreds.

I'm currently in the process of growing my hair long enough to thread some dreads, so to speak. I'm not black, but I've inherited some traits from my grandfather who's mother was Nigerian. This basically means that I've never been able to do shit with my hair - it is currently a fucking afro. I've been bald and hatted at various stages throughout my life, and this is basically my last stand against it. The showdown.

On that note, does anybody know the proper name for those hats often worn by those with dreadlocks? Like a supersized beany?

Personally, I prefer short hair, like a buzz cut - two inches length. It's easier to take care of, and never gets in the way. I used to have long hair, but it was only cause I wanted to see what it'd look like lol.

I believe they're called: slouches, slouchies, souchie beanie (<-or some combination of these), or tam hat.

I would love to have dreads, in fact I have seriously considered starting them more than once in my life. I just wish society on the whole was more accepting towards them, there are just so many rumours and misconcenptions out about dreads. It's sad.

Dreads are beautiful no matter what color your skin is. I love seeing people with them around my city, there are quite a few dreadies around here.

There's a kid at my school with freckles and vibrant red hair, and he's got foot long dreads. They are sick. He's not even tan white, he's pasty white, haha... but he's still got a really badass look going on. There are few other more normal looking white kids with dreads at my school, and overall I'd say they look sick. Saying dreads are just for blacks is stupid, and reversed-racism.

I love how dreads look on people of any race/skin color. They are cool and everyone's dreads are unique and they have their own flair to them. When I was in highschool I started the dread process and had them for about a month. They never really "locked", but were just starting to get to the stages where they arent annoying as hell when I had to take them out because my boss decided that I couldnt have them. It really pissed me off and I considered quitting, but I got them out through the use of an entire bottle of conditioner and shampoo and a couple hours in the bathtub. Be patient if you try and grow them. Make sure your hair is long enough before you start or you will just end up getting frustrated. There are a lot of waxes and stuff available that help accelerate the dreading process, I would also reccomend getting some of that but use it sparingly because you dont want a greasy twisted mess on your head, that doesnt look good. You will also want to wash your hair with natural soap (or dread soap) for a few days before you commence the dreading, that way it is not conditioned at all and is more succeptible to tangling and dreading. Other than that, go for it, they are awesome. I agree that it is totally lame to think that they should only be worn by certain races...give me a break.

i'm in the proccess of growing my hair out for em now. Unfortunetly, I shaved my head while i was drunk towards the summer's end (my hair was about 6" at the time), so i had to restard growing my hair, it's about 4" long now. Jack, how long was your hair when you started and how long were your dreads? I figure on waiting till mine's about a foot long
