a placebo affect and how does it work?????????????

A placebo effect is when you take a "drug" that claims to do something, but is actually inert (doesn't do anything, like a sugar pill or something). Many times, the suggestion that it will succeed- specifically, your expectation that it will succeed- causes your brain to adjust the body's behavior and reaction unconciously to match what the drug claims it will do. However, they are only shown to have superficial effects- they might help you with pain or other symptoms, or help you get to sleep, but they won't actually cure an illness or anything.

Often, on these boards and indeed elsewhere in everday American life, the "placebo effect" is used in a different context, often meaning any situation in which the belief of the subject, and not any other external factor, determined the outcome of something. On these boards, we most often use it to describe a technique that someone claims gets them higher, shen there is no logical reason for doing so. A common example is the claim of getting just as baked from exhaled smoke in the air. Marijuana smoke in the air, if inhaled, is almost completely without THC content- most THC is absorbed within 3 seconds in your lungs (most conservative estimate; I've heard as quickly as the first second), so the smoke you breath out has no appreciable THC content (note that if you hotbox with a joint or blunt, smoke in the air WILL have THC in it).

A lot of people scoff at people who say placebo effects get them higher, but I think that if it helps you enjoy your high more, why the hell not?

I got a good story about the placebo effect i read in a Psychology for Personal Effectiveness Book, my first college course ever.

This man had a fatal type of cancer. He was told that there was no cure, nor hope for what he has and that he will soon die. The mans health went south and just kept going south.

The doctors tried a placebo on him, telling him that this new wonder drug came out and would stop his disease.

After weeks of taking it, the mans cancer goes into remission. He keeps taking this drug and believes that he is cured.

Now here is the sad part...

The guy watches the news one day and they report that the drug hes been taking was a bomb and had no effect at all.

The guy eventually ends up back in the hospital and his cancer returns and he passes.

The point was that the mind is stronger then the body. If your mind believes it, its true.

Which has me wondering if you believe in a higher power, will you go to "heaven" simply because your mind has you believe you are going to such a place? When you die, would you go into a dream state and since you believe that when you die you actually dream about being in heaven forever?

Also, do you think you could make yourself trip simply because you think you took something or believe that you are having flashbacks?

So many things the mind can do, so little we know about any of it.
