I live in southern california (ventura county) and I have friends/co-workers who keep telling me about their friends, parents, etc. getting medicinal mj cards and how easy it is.

I've researched it a bit and I have at least 2 illnesses in which it can be perscribed for, one of which I am currently taking perscription medicine for. Also I know that ganja will help my condition because I use it recreationally

Now my question is how do I go about getting one of these cards? Do I just tell my docter "hey I smoke reefer and I know it helps so can I get some perscribed?" or do I have to get a note and go to a special clinic or what?

My friends say how easy it is but I get a different (or no) answer from each and I don't want to make an ass of myself, much less get in trouble, for doing this the wrong way.

First off, you don't get it "prescribed", it is recommended.

You mean they don't have weed at my local drug store? lol..
I've never tried medicinal, but a good friend of mine did, and she said it made her tired and shit.. and wasn't very good. Isn't medicinal marijuana different?

Do you think they would give it to someone for bipolar disorder, since it involves depression? I want to get it.

It's typically of a high quality. IF you have a good connect, it's very likely that what you get 'on the street' is as good or better than medical marijuana.

If you live in a state with a medical MJ law on the books, why don't you go visit your doctor and ask some questions.

To be honest, though...
If you're asking questions like "Could I get a MMJ recommend for this or that affliction?", you probably have no legitimate medical need and are probably simply seeking a legal loophole. (In my opinion.)

ok I did some reading but I'm still confused about one thing: Can my normal doctor recomend mj or do I need to go to a special one for a 100-200 dollar consultation?

I've never mentioned smoking pot to my doctor and I don't want him to suddenly have a negitive view towords me, especially if he can't even help me in the first place.
