Default Public transportation vs. Personal transportation

We are a nation obsessed with owning our own vehicles. With rising gas prices and the looming thread of pollution and global warming, more and more people are opting to utilize the forgotten public transportation systems in their communities.

Assuming you have a dailiy commute, or like all people are required to move around town, how many people here drive their own cars as opposed to using buses, subways, or other forms of public transportations?

I use to be fascinated with the fact of owning my own car. It seems that back in the day when gas prices weren't so high and the effects of pollution less known everyone wanted to drive a car. It at least seemed like an obsession for teenagers, it is- isn't it?

I don't see any advantages which would want to make me invest in 'built in obsolescence', polluting the earth plus possible legal ramifications, so I didn't buy a car. I use my mothers occasionally, but I really like the bus system.

I live in a smaller community so it might be easier than some. Not only do have I saved money, put it back into the community, and helped the environment but I just love talking to anyone and everyone on the bus. I live too far from my college to walk, but close enough for a minute long bus ride, thats my daily commute. My summer job is downtown but the commute is still only 15 minutes or so. I live 2 stones throw from my elder dealer. I am very fortunate to have everything close by.

Not to mention, I don't condone smoking or being under the influence of any substances while driving, or even carrying them. It's necessary at times but usually an avoidable risk. I'm sure everyone knows someone who has gotten in trouble being pulled over.

Anyways, I'm already expecting most people to say they have there own car, regardless I'm not saying one is better than the other, I am asking what you use and maybe why? Your daily commute? Does anyone bike to school or work?

edit: Shit I forgot to put a poll option, could a moderator perhaps make the options Personal and Public transportation. Thanks

I take the bus to work.. except when I can borrow my parents' car (which usually only happens on the weekends). The reason I take the bus is because I can't afford a car right now, and even if I could, I'd rather pay $60/month to take the bus rather than $600+/month to have a car. Plus, I get more exercise by taking the bus, since it is a bit of a jaunt to the nearest bus stop.

Oh yes, if anyone listens to music or reads on the bus you should mention that.

I am always listening to my Zune and usually read the news paper on the bus since it's always there.

I used to use my car. Because when the decision time came I picked the option that was going to be easier for me and didn't think about pollution or dependence on foreign oil or anything like that. I lived 30miles into the country so there was no bus service for miles and to bike anywhere would be a journey. I gotta be honest the whole "have my car" scene has done me right.

But I'm on to the new fad - I get rides from friends and family because I can't drive and to walk I get this super awesome forest-based mobility enhancer. Some people know it as a "cane".

Same here. I always try to take my mp3 player with me.. it's better than listening to the crazies talk on the bus, haha. I usually have a newspaper with me too, but I take the bus right before "rush hour", so I usually end up having to stand up.

I ride my motorcycle to school. Less pollution than a car.

I would love to take a bus/subway to school/work but its not offered where i am currently living. Subways/trains dont seem to work well anywhere except new york. The MARTA system in atlanta is horrible.

Where did you get this notion? Subways and trains are utilized all over the world and they work just fine.

I drive my van to get to places. But if I get this internship in Washington DC there is no way in hell I'm driving that. Definitely the Metro...
