| My cats are all declawed, and as far as survival goes they dont have a problem. the one conistently kills mice, moles, birds, and snakes. All without front claws...

| nope, it's mutilation. like lobbing off the top digit of your fingers. every vet i've ever talked to about it acknowledges the pain involved. a friend of mine has three cats. I'm sure with the right care and training, especially early on (she got them from the humane society, not as kittens), cats could be taught not to tear stuff up. hers do tear her couch arms up, though, but as she puts is, she loves her cats more than her furniture. ![]() |

| Every cat in my family has been declawed in the front by my parents, and none of them have ever had a problem. They did not suffer excessive pain afterwards, and they are still fully capable of defending themselves (as they prove by tearing around fighting each other all the time). Our first cats were only declawed after they scratchd a hole through the back of our first couch. I agree that declawing is painful at the time, but so is every other surgery frankly and personally, I have not seen any behavior out of my cats in the last eleven years that would make me think, "Oh, I'm never going to declaw my cats. It's so cruel." They're indoors though. I would never declaw an outdoor or indoor/outdoor cat just because I would want them to have those front claws available in case they were attacked by a dog. ALSO: As someone who has worked with cats at the shelter, I know firsthand that cats can *easily* defend themselves with just their teeth and back claws. Front claws are a bonus weapon. A cat that is even only slightly agitated can bite down to the bone with little effort. (And I have the scar to prove it.) Front claws are actually secondary to back claws in a fight, because the cat will grab on with its forearms and rake with its back claws.

| I own 3 cats and they are declawed on their front paws. Once you decide to declaw them, they are now indoor pets.....for life. |

| Oh I did. It may not seem like it but getting your cat fixed is a good thing for them and you. I love my cats. I had one of my cats live for 17 years and when he died, I cried like a baby. But he was also declawed. I know it hurts them and their little feet are in pain for a good period of time but it goes away and then their little minds have forgotten all about it. They still think they have claws as they go up to the furniture and pretend they are sharpening them or when they get angry, they will bat at me or the kids with their paws. I believe that they are having a happy life in my house. They have lots of food to eat, a clean litter box to mess up, a window perch to dream about killing the birds and a pillow to lay on, next to the fireplace on a cold winters night. |

Good thing she only had two kittens, one being a hemming way cat (Six toes in the front paws)As for declawing, both my cats were declawed and spade at the same time. Making it one long vet trip but not the need for multiple. Plus im sure that they pump those kitties so full of ketamine it probably doesn't hurt that much, its still a medical procedure its not like they don't give them stuff for the pain. Though I am not a cat so I cant really say. As for them being able to defend themselves? My cats are indoor and don't have any inclination of going outside. I feel they don't want to be bothered by nature, those lazy bastards ![]()
