I'm set up for automatic updates for XP.
So, after this behemoth finally finishes downloading, I install it.
I was expecting all sorts of dll errors and runtime crap showing up afterwards. Well, it was worse than that. Once I re-booted, my system crashed.
Had to manually restart the damn thing. (Hit the panic button )
It took three re-boots and about two complete shut downs to even get back online, much less do anything else.
Anybody else having this problem?

Don't be overly alarmed. Just Microsoft destroying your XP so you'll be forced to downgrade to Vista. Backing up files is recommended. Proceed to the crappiest operating system evah in an orderly manner.

I had a sort of paranoia set in that the reason my compy downloaded this, was because I signed the anti Vista petition

I DL'd service pack 3, and didn't have a problem. I hope I never do because I wont be getting Vista anytime soon.

I had Vista set to automatically download and install recommended updates and it turned out one such update killed people's mouse drivers, with the only fix being to roll back to a restore point.

It's humbling, though. You pay these guys £70 for their OS and are swamped with love and support and retard-proof suggestions, and one day--without any warning whatsoever--they turn around and punch you in the face.

I've set it to only automatically install security updates, now.

My main computer is my MacBook Pro but I do occasionally use my desktop for gaming, I upgraded from SP2->SP3 and didn't have any real problems, it just broke my themes because I was using a cracked .dll, but I didn't really mind. Definitely won't be downgrading to vista.

Yes I would also recommend against SP3. It's amazing how many updates Microsoft puts out that cause something to go wrong. I'm a tech so I see it often.

Same here. Microsoft sucks. My computer went to shit when I did the service pack download and wouldn't straighten out till I downloaded a bunch more shit afterwards. Now, wouldn't you know it, i'm on the same computer after it just had a fresh wipe and reinstall of Windows.

I think i'm going to switch to Linux.
All the same great taste, with half the fat.
