ADHD is like having a bunch of TVs in your head, all running different programs, and having no ability to control them. Marijuana not only appears to give me a remote, it also allows me to shut off all the other TVs sucking up the juice... which makes the TV I'm watching a bit brighter. |

| Interesting indeed. Didnt realize computer technology is still under an insects brain. edit...

| According to this plot, we should be over insect brains by now... and coming up real soon on mouse brains. If I'm not mistaken, in June there was a supercomputer costing $100,000,000 doing 1 quadrillion (1,000,000,000,000,000) calculations per second. Since it's per $1,000, I interpreted that to be 100,000 units to divide 1 quadrillion by, or 10,000,000,000, or 10xe10, right below the mouse brain... So in the last 10 years, we've gone from a fair amount below an insects brain to just barely below a mouse's... mmm, technology... they'll be smarter than us long before I die (hopefully, I guess, could die tomorrow, after all). I for one welcome our computer overlords with outstretched hands... need someone to hit the on switch for skynet? I'm your man, computers. I'd also like to point out that I'd serve more admirably as a human-computer diplomat than as a simple slave... just saying, o great overlords.

| This is a strange graph. There's no comparing a computer to a brain of any sort, quite yet. Yes, we can program Neural Nets and things like is that simulate the action of neurons, but at this point nobody's every come up with anything that is quite like a brain. Fuzzy logic is the worst of all and quite hard to emulate. But that's a completely different discussion. It's interesting how they measure calculations compared to a mouse brain or human brain. I wonder what we'll be able to do further on with the expansion of neural nets and genetic algorithms? One can only imagine... We're looking at 8-core, 16-core, and 32-core processors by the turn of the decade. Can you imagine? |

| Cool shit. I wonder what the individual red plots indicate? Specific computers?

| Another mind-boggling fact is that this is just the hardware power that is shown here. Because of the amount of time and manpower it takes to write software, pretty much all software written for PC (or MACs etc.) is highly inefficient. (Warning - it gets technical here) Even a perfectly written C program, once compiled, can execute in twice the time and memory that a program written in assembly would. The majority of end-user software is orders of magnitude worse than this. The moral? At some point in that curve, processors will be powerful enough to compile programs to run way more efficiently - basically meaning that they will be even faster! |
