| my computer is 10 years old. yeah 10. it runs really smooth with certain things...others not soo much. its Pentium 2 233MHz Upgraded to 128Ram and run XP (even though its not recomended) I have Rogers which is Cable. Always fast... connection isnt the problem. Getting a new one is ideal, but not possible. | |

Cheers! EDIT: Almost forgot... if for some reason you overcome the impossibility of getting a new computer, building your own is the way to go. If you've got a friend who knows about it, then it will be worth your time/money to have him/her build you one. Don't buy into that eMachine crap at office depot ![]() | |

| Well first off, go to start, run, then type msconfig (or use a program called StartupList, which is way better, you can get it at http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html), then click on the start up tab and look for things that are starting up that you do need. Those programs often take up a ton of memory and you probably never use alot of them anyways. Then download spybot search and destroy at http://www.safer-networking.org/ and do a spyware scan, spyware often sucks up a ton of resources on your system. Next download "hijack this" from http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html, now "hijack this" is usally used for visible browser hijackers but it also finds a ton of other stuff that spybot won't that you usally get infected though IE. Also "Hijack this" dosent really detect spyware, it basically prints out a log of a ton of stuff that is running on your system, many of which is are probably critical system files, so don't remove anything that you don't know what it is. Post a copy of the log file to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showforum=30 those people will help you figure out what and how to remove any malicious files, which may be slowing you down. Basically I would recomend that everyone do these steps, weather you are noticing any system slow down or not, because will almost certainly help system performace. But like whiteboy said, downgrading your OS to one that doesnt use as many resources would highly improve performace. Ive run WinXP on the bare minium system requirments, and it isnt pretty. If you really want to keep xp I would at least upgrade your ram, and if possible you should probably upgrade your processor as well. I hope that helps. EDIT: Oh, and download mozilla firefox, and see if you have the same slow down with that browser, if you dont then IE has almost certainly been infected. Plus firefox is way better than IE anyways, you can get it at http://mozilla.org/ .

| New Member | Going back to Windows 98 would be the smartest thing you could ever do. With 128 megs ur system should do pretty good. You might and i stress the might part, be able to run win 2k. but i would just stick with the 98. |

| If you're very attached to XP, then I would recommend deleting some unused programs. Yes, spyware can suck up a lot of resources, but a PC game like Max Payne can use up almost 1600 MB. Click Start-Control Panel-Add or Remove Programs. Then remove anything you don't use. Sort the programs based on frequency of use or size. Also, set your computer theme to windows classic. The XP skin lowers performance. Also, right click on My Computer. Click Properties. Click the Advanced tab and then Settings under Performance. Select Adjust For Best Performance under the Visual Effects tab. The other tab should be all set. Those are some easy things to speed up the comp. I recommend deleting programs periodically or whenever you find that your computer is too slow. If you've got some cash, get one of those ****ty Dell computers for $700 or a ****ty Compaq. Almost all companies make a ****ty model which is easy on the wallet. Pick one up if you have to, but if you want a real computer, try voodoopc.com or alienware.com. That's some powerful ****! |
