Take out your Windows XP CD and load it on bootup. Go to Recovery Console and type in the format command. Depending on your file system it will be different. NTFS is by far the best, and using a quick format is much faster because it simply tells each sector that it can be over written without acually writing a "zero" on each of the billions of binary positions. The quick format command with NTFS is

format c:/ fs:ntfs /q

if you have a different drive designation such as n:/ then simply replace c:/ with n:/.

If you want to plan on reformatting your C: dirve, keep in mind that EVERYTHING on the hard drive will be lost, so you should backup everything you care about.

Reformatting your computer will not magically make it faster, it will only allow your computer to run at its full potential witch is fininate (unless you want to overclock your processer, but im not getting into that here)

You will need a CD with Microsoft Windows on it, throw it in and reboot your computer, installing windows is rather self-expanitory (but if you have the cd you porbally have some sort of documentatin that came with it).

Reformatting your dirve will not nessairly make the computer faster, basically all that it does in the area of speeding up your computer is to remove all the porgrams that would be running in the background that hog up system resources. Thoese porgrams can also be eliminated without reinstalling windows. The programs that are allways running in the background that you installed can useally be disabled, or if they can't be disabled, they can be removed with the ad/remove programs control panel, after thoese there is probally some ad-ware, you can take care of that with Lavasoft Ad-Aware (free http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ ). Also, if your useing windows XP you should look into see what services that you are running, some can be disabled to get a litte more power out of your computer ( http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm )
