Default Tinkerers, help me please....

Okay, I have an old ass E-Machines computer that I use for screwing around on the net and such. At the moment it has a Cyrix MII 366 MMx processor which is okay but what I want to know is can I install this AMD-K6-2/450 AFX in its place without replacing anything else?

How much trouble it would be, and well, is it worth all the time and trouble?

I know "step out of the dark ages and buy a new computer" is the standard answer, but hey, I'm cheap and christmas is coming. Stuff for me is waaaaaay off on the horizon (maybe April) and well I got this here now.

So theres my problem, I'll take a link, a color step by step diagram. A scathing essay on what a computer illiterate I am (as long as you tell me what I need to do). Anything that'll help really, and can we keep it to English please? I tried Google-ing some info but unless you know major tech speak it aint much help, I'm a stoner for goodness sake!

youre gonna have to get a new motherboard for sure dude. Most likely gonna need to get the correct ram to go along with it.

And dude, unless your budget is like $20 get at leat a 1 gig processor and motherboard, theyre dirt cheap now.

but you are for sure goin to need the right motherboard for the AMD, the cyrix one is more than likely gonna be incompatible.

ill let some more computer literate stoners take it from here

Yeah, you will not be able to install an AMD K6 on that computer...it can't be done. You're better off just replacing the computer all together, which can still be done for very little money. Here's one with the same power you were looking at:

I can't even find a board that supports a K6...I hate to say it but it's so old that you can get newer stuff that's more powerful for a lesser price.

Just to be specific, this is stuff I had laying around. Being December and since I want a computer for me, it's taking a back seat until maybe May so all the other wonderful people in my life get what they want.

The processor fit, the board worked fine ( notice I said worked ) but there were some hardware issues when it came to the DIP switches for the core voltage, I broke one. Anyway, thanks for the input, I got this here computer from my brother-in-law (AKA Garage dweller) who found it on the side of the road with a burnt out power supply. About 2 minutes of 'compustiening' and viola, I'm surfing again. Hope it hangs out 'til I can treat myself to something nice.

K6 CPUs usually fit a socket 7 motherboard. Give it a shot.

Preparation: Buy some thermal goop from your local geek mart. They'll know
what you're talking about even if you don't.

Step 1: See the radiator-looking heat sink on the motherboard? unclip it.

Step 2: Lift the lever on the side of the CPU socket and lift the Cyrix out

Step 3: Put the K6 in (remember, you should not have to force it)

Step 4: Spread thermal goop on top of the K6 and reattach the heat sink.

Step 5: Cross your fingers and turn the thing on.
