Is anyone else here a big enough nerd to have learned qwerty (the standard keyboard layout), found out about dvorak (the more efficient keyboard layout), and spent grueling weeks of head-aches training yourself to type in it?

Here's the dvorak layout, compared to qwerty:



As you can see, all the vowels and common consonants are now in the home keys, whereas qwerty is designed around the limitations of the typewriter. If you typed too fast on a typewriter, it would jam, so they put common letter combinations on either hand. With dvorak, you can type faster and allow your fingers to travel shorter distances. But since people are stubborn and like to stick with what they know (just look at how we're still using the Imperial measurement system and snubbing the metric one), dvorak is only a geeky cultish sort of thing to know.

So... who else is a huge nerd?

I can type at 90-100 words a minute on qwerty... Why would you need to learn another layout type, though? Does anyone even sell those?
That'd be cool just for something mad different, especially if it's faster.

I know the QWERTY layout pretty well, and I've dealt with AZERTY a couple times, which is more confusing. I almost want to buy a second keyboard and rearrange it to try this system. I absolutely HATE one-handed typing on QWERTY.

Whoa, that's so sweet! What a good idea... That is a qwerty keyboard, right? $80 might be a little much, though.

You certainly hope it's a QWERTY keyboard.
I believe that this is also a mechanical-switch keyboard (a la Keytronic or Cherry), as opposed to an el-cheapo membrane-switch keyboard like the vast majority are.

I can honestly say that I've successfully converted myself to the metric system. It was tough, but I did it. And to top it off, I even measure temperature in Celsius. That was easy, though.

I couldn't imagine switching keyboard's. I do most of my work on a laptop, and finding a Dvorak keyboard would be difficult. My main desktop PC is a gaming rig. I mostly play FPS style games. I think this would just about kill my WASD control...

I've always wanted to learn the Dvorak layout, but I'm just sooooooo efficient with QWERTY that I'm scurred that it would hose my typing skillz.

Sheeeit...I have a hard time when I'm on a new keyboard that has the backslash in a different spot let alone a completely new layout.

I could rock that no problem, I'm a pretty good typer. It's kind of crazy realizing that you have the location of every key memorized, I guess that's what happens after years of drumming it into your mind.
